Communications & IT Officer

CRISIS GROUP – WASHINGTON

International Crisis Group is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, with some 130 staff members on five continents, working through field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict worldwide. Widely recognised as the world’s leading independent, non-partisan, source of analysis and advice to governments, and intergovernmental bodies on the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict, Crisis Group is seeking a Communications & IT Officer based in our Washington, DC office.

COMMUNICATIONS & IT OFFICER

Role:
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting equally both our Communications efforts and our Information Technology provision. The ideal candidate for this hybrid post will be an outstanding all-rounder, with a range of skills across the full spectrum of external and internal communications.

Responsibilities:
50% - Communications/50% Information Technology
Assist the Communications Director for North America in assuring the organisation’s positions are well-represented in influential media outlets, AND assist the IT Manager in providing support for the organisation’s information technology needs. This includes assistance in:
• tracking foreign policy issues related to conflict prevention and resolution, Crisis Group’s presence, and new media and information technology trends to identify opportunities in both internal and external communications;
• creating basic communications outputs, such as producing podcasts and vodcasts, drafting op-eds and media releases, updating content and materials on Crisis Group’s website, sending targeted mass emails, engaging in advocacy-driven social media, and organising events;
• managing relationships by maintaining contact lists and databases -- arranging interviews with journalists as well as interacting with technology partners;
• overseeing and training Communications interns;
• supporting organisation-wide internal communications by providing practical and user-specific solutions for those working in challenging environments;
• enabling staff to attain ever greater efficiency and productivity in their information-based output, both office-based and mobile, meaning:
o in tangible terms: purchasing, setting up and maintaining basic IT hardware and software for DC and NY offices, including network operation; and
o in intangible terms: providing constant training to staff on appropriate technologies.
Requirements:
For this unique position, Crisis Group is seeking a multi-talented self-starter who can sensibly manage a variety of competing priorities in a fast-paced working environment of demanding individuals. The person must have practical knowledge of technologies such as content management systems, LAN, WiFi, mobile phones, VoIP, SaaS, VPN, common operating systems and productivity software, anti-virus services and audio/video editing packages. He or she must have strong writing skills and a nose for public debates in foreign affairs. Experience in a newsroom or journalism setting would be a plus, as would in-depth familiarity of US media engagement in foreign affairs issues. English is the working language, but additional languages would be very welcome, of course.

This is a job for a dedicated, tech-minded creative. While no day will be typical, one might include meeting an expert fresh off a plane from a war-torn country; setting up an interview for that person with a top TV news program; downloading his or her knowledge and drafting an op-ed for them targeting a major paper; recording a podcast with that person; providing him or her with a new laptop and mobile; and then, before they head out to the airport again, explaining to him or her how to use a new media tool to improve their effectiveness in their job of gathering, analysing, compiling and distributing information. In short, this is not for those who are easily overwhelmed.
