For 60 years now our Unit in The Gambia has been carrying out internationally competitive research and have established ourselves as the leading research centre in sub-Saharan Africa. Perhaps more importantly, we continue to push forward into new and challenging areas. We have developed an exciting new research agenda to reflect changes in national and global health priorities. Our new science portfolio is organised around three themes: Child Survival, Disease Control & Elimination and Vaccination.

The biomedical engineering program at the MRC is fully responsible for the management and in-house maintenance of over 1,700 clinical and laboratory biomedical technologies at field sites across The Gambia, with a total asset value of over £4 million. Our ten biomedical engineering technologists have been factory service trained on sophisticated technologies including flow cytometry, diagnostic imaging, automated chemistry and haematology analysers, safety cabinet certification, etc.

We are seeking to appoint a Head of Biomedical Engineering to be responsible for maintaining, streamlining and managing our Biomedical Engineering service at a level that ensures continuity and sustainability of our research and clinical laboratories. You will also provide capacity development assistance to our West African sub-regional partners.

You will have a BSc/MSc in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering with specialization in Biomedical Engineering or other suitable engineering graduate degree in healthcare technology from an accredited institution with proven experience of at least 3 years managing biomedical technology at a medium-size health and/or research institute. You will be a strong manager with experience in developing training plans/strategies in the developing world and demonstrated change management & budgetary/cost management skills.

Although not essential, previous experience working in capacity development and biomedical technology training in the developing world would be an advantage. Professional member of a relevant professional institute (IEEE, IET, ACCE etc.) also considered an asset.

The appointment will be for 3 years extendable by mutual agreement.

An attractive salary will be paid in MRC’s Band 3 or 4 dependent on qualifications and experience.
