Value Chain Science Leader - Livestock & Fish
WorldFish is a Partner Center of the CGIAR Research Program on Livestock & Fish, led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in collaboration with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).
The Livestock & Fish Program works to sustainably increase the productivity, availability and affordability of meat, milk and fish by and for the poor, and is structured around six Themes: Animal Health, Genetics, Feeds, Value Chains, Targeting Sustainable Intensification, and Gender & Learning.
WorldFish oversees the Program’s fish related value chain and technology development research and is now seeking a highly motivated, dynamic, and experienced individual to head up the Livestock and Fish effort in Bangladesh.
As a Value Chain Science Leader, you will engage proactively and closely with WorldFish other CGIAR colleagues engaged in the Livestock and Fish program, collaborating CGIAR research programs (Aquatic Agricultural Systems; Agriculture for Nutrition and Health; and Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security) and research and development partners in the Bangladesh fish value chain.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a long-term strategy towards achieving the Livestock & Fish program outcomes and objectives in Bangladesh and supporting the WorldFish vision in Bangladesh;
- Lead, guide, and coordinate work in close collaboration with the WorldFish leadership team in Bangladesh and the Livestock & Fish team across WorldFish to ensure that a timely, scientifically robust and well-structured process is followed;
- Ensure effective implementation of methods and process promoting a pro-poor and gender responsive market-oriented approach;
- Facilitate dialogue and pursue synergies with the other CGIAR programs for a well-integrated and effective overall WorldFish research in development program in the country.
- Prepare and lead implementation of the annual Livestock & Fish program plan of work and budget for Bangladesh and ensure quality and timely deliverables; monitor progress and prepare progress reports;
- Identify funding opportunities and priorities and lead Livestock & Fish resource mobilization efforts in the country;
- Plan and implement a stakeholder engagement process and develop and manage strategic partnerships that improve the program’s ability to achieve the agreed outputs and outcomes;
- Help design and implement a coherent communications strategy in collaboration with WorldFish Communications staff;
- Contribute scientific and technical expertise and products according to competencies and prioritize and coordinate delivery of science and development outputs and outcomes;
- Monitor and mentor staff recruited to work under the Livestock & Fish program in Bangladesh to carry out their duties effectively according to their Personal Management Plans. Support staff to develop their performance and further their career development.
Skill Requirements:
- PhD or Master’s degree in agricultural economics, development studies, aquaculture or a closely related field;
- At least 5-10 years of relevant research-for-development experience, preferably including in Bangladesh;
- Experience in value chain analysis and development; experience with the Making Markets Work for the Poor (M4P) and/or Participatory Market Chain Approach is an advantage;
- Good publications and resource mobilization track record;
- Strong leadership, coordination, communication and program management skills and talent, and excellent analytical and writing skills;
- Ability to adopt a strategic perspective and a desire to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
- Fluency in English;
- Fully computer literate;
- Good appreciation of theories of change, impact pathways, and gender transformative approaches that contribute to development outcomes and impact; and
- Ability and willingness to travel and (re)present the program nationally and internationally.
