Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a Coordinator to provide administrative assistance to its Communications Division and to run the global press desk as part of a team.  This position reports to the Communications Director and also supports other members of the Communications Division. The Communications Division is part of the External Relations Department which oversees all media, digital, and multimedia communications for HRW. The External Relations Department works to determine the best messages, the right audiences, and the best vehicle to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and reports on.
Responsibilities:
1. Proofread, format, and distribute press materials, such as news releases and media advisories;
2. Respond to queries from journalists, editors, producers, and bookers;
3. Help maintain and build Human Rights Watch’s global media contact database;
4. Monitor media coverage;
5. Assist Human Rights Watch researchers and advocates in planning and implementing media strategies;
6. Pitch story ideas to relevant journalists;
7. Assist with preparation for news conferences, meetings, and special events;
8. Recruit and coordinate interns;
9. Coordinate translations, including the recruitment of translators, arranging and tracking payments, and distributing training materials;
10. Provide substantive, logistical, and administrative assistance to Communications Division staff, including processing departmental finances, filing, assisting in travel plans, drafting and editing correspondence;
11. Curate and post material to the website; and
12. Carry out other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education:  A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international affairs, or other relevant field is required.
Experience:  A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant work experience is required. 
Related Skills and Knowledge: 
1. Excellent proofreading and oral communication skills in English are required; proficiency in other languages is strongly preferred.
2. Strong interpersonal skills, including patience and a sense of humor, nd ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
3. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with close attention to detail are required.
4. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
5. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
6. Flexibility to work evening hours and some weekends is required.
7. Strong interest in international human rights and media, including social media, is strongly preferred.

Middle East and Africa (“MENA”) Division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Arabic Web Manager to support HRW online, one of the world’s premier sources of human rights information. This position reports to the Advocacy and Communications Director in the division. The successful candidate can work from Beirut, Amman, or Tunis Office.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage the translations team as well as translation requests and ensure a smooth workflow that adheres to deadlines;
2. Translate urgent materials when necessary; Work with the Multimedia Division to translate photo essay captions and video subtitles in a timely manner;
3. Vet translations for accuracy and update HRW’s Arabic language glossary and translation memory system, providing translators with updated lexicons of legal (IHRL/IHL) terminology to ensure homogeneity of terms;
4. Update and maintain the HRW website in Arabic, ensure country pages are up to date, and post content to the website when required;
5. Maintain and increase HRW’s Arabic language presence in social media on FacebookTwitter and YouTubeand support MENA staff in utilizing Arabic social media;
6. Promote HRW news releases, reports, photos, and videos in prominent Arabic-language media;
7. Maintain and update HRW’s media lists in MENA;
8. Process invoices, attain approval from managers, and keep track of how many words per day the Arabic translation process can produce at any given time; and
9. Carry out any other tasks as required.
Qualifications:
Education:  A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, social sciences, international relations, Middle Eastern studies, or a relevant field is required. An advanced degree in a relevant area is desirable.
Experience: A minimum of three years of online journalism and web editing experience and a minimum of one year of directly related experience in translations are required.  A minimum of one year of experience as a social media manager is preferred.  
Related Skills and Knowledge: 
1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Arabic are required.
2. Demonstrated experience with translating material from English to Arabic and vice versa is required. Experience with translation workflows is desirable.
3. Experience working on a Content Management System (“CMS”), Drupal preferred, or publishing to a website is required.
4. Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required.
5. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required.
6. Ability to recognize editorial opportunities is required.

2. Monitoring and documenting human rights practices in Colombia by conducting fact-finding missions and collecting and analyzing information from a wide variety of sources, including government agencies and institutions, local media, NGOs, journalists, diplomats, and others in the field;
