EFSL Coordinator (Oxfam GB)
EFSL Coordinator
9 month contract, July 2011 – March 2012
Sana’a, Yemen
Oxfam’s Emergency Food Security and Livelihoods specialists empower communities affected by humanitarian crises to regain and rebuild their livelihoods. As one of the world’s developing countries, our ongoing relief and development programmes are integral to helping the people of Yemen establish a better way of life.
Background
Oxfam GB has been active in Yemen for the past 27 years. Currently key programme priorities are: good governance, legal protection, women economic empowerment, and Humanitarian Response. Policy advocacy work at national and local level coupled with empowerment and consistent engagement with civil society organisations is the main vehicle through which Oxfam attempts to make a positive and sustainable change in the lives of the poor. Oxfam currently works in five Governorates, and at the National level. Overall, general criteria for selecting these areas were based on poverty, the presence of active civil society organisations, humanitarian needs and the possibility of creating positive examples of change.
Linked to Oxfam’s dual responsibility of development and humanitarian assistance, the country program has implemented humanitarian response program in times of need. The last successful emergency response programme completed by Oxfam GB in Yemen was in October 2008. This emergency was as a result of heavy rains and flooding in Hadramout Governorate. Oxfam GB is currently engaged in the second phase of humanitarian response in the three northern governorates of Hajjah, Sa’ada and Amran. Response has been concentrated around provision of WASH interventions. Oxfam is currently expanding its scope in humanitarian work to include broader food security and livelihood considerations while at the same time supporting those in need to boost their resilience in the face of disasters. All these are areas where Oxfam GB has competence and capacity. Oxfam GB recently concluded a Food Security and livelihood Assessment among the war-affected populations in the north of the country.
