INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR DEMOCRACY AND ELECTORAL ASSISTANCE

Researchers in participation/inclusion

Call for case study research on successful marginalized group inclusion in 1. Customary Governance structures or processes and/or 2. Democratic governance structures or processes

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1995, with member states across all continents, which aims to support sustainable democracy world-wide and assist in the development of institutions and the culture of democracy. At the interface between research, fieldwork and the donor community, International IDEA provides a forum for dialogue, builds networks of experts, develops training materials and provides strategic advice at the international, regional and national level, cooperating with a range of organizations.

The Institute now invites the submission of summary papers and, if approved, case studies from field practitioners and/or researchers in participation/inclusion on:

  1. Examples of how historically marginalized groups (e.g., women, religious or ethnic minorities, the disabled, non-heterosexuals, people with HIV/AIDS, the geographically isolated, etc.,) have managed to overcome their exclusion from customary or indigenous/tribal governance structures and processes through initiatives that have changed knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practices on the part of customary decision makers
  2. Examples of how marginalized groups have managed to overcome their exclusion from democratic governance structures and processes through initiatives that have changed knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practices on the part of dominant cultures and/or their decision makers

This call for case studies comprises:

  • an initial call for summary papers of 1,500 words describing the case study and the key processes of change and their outcomes, the deadline of which is August 22 2011, and if selected,
  • a full case study of between 9,000 and 10,000 words in length, the content of which is summarised under section 3 of the Terms of Reference to be found at http://www.idea.int/about/vacancies/.

Those contributors succeeding in having their case study summaries selected by International IDEA will be notified on August 29, 2001 and requested to submit a case study.

The deadline for case study submission is October 31, 2011. Contributors submitting case studies accepted by International IDEA will be paid €5,000 per case study for a maximum of two case studies.
Reimbursable expenses incurred during the researching of case studies can be claimed up to a limit of €2,500 per case study.

Selected case studies will:

  • be included in an International IDEA collection of case studies to inform discussion, dialogue and debate on key issues arising from the case studies,
  • form the basis of policy papers informing governments and other stakeholders of evidence based approaches to promoting participation and reducing marginalized group exclusion in decision making, and
  • be considered as content for a series of International IDEA films to be commissioned and used to raise awareness about effective approaches to overcoming marginalization and exclusion.

  • Interested researchers should refer to the projects’ Terms of Reference at http://www.idea.int/about/vacancies/ or email K.Jorgensen@idea.int .
