Senior Specialist, Basic Education & Literacy
The Basic Education and Literacy Specialist will provide state of the art technical support and guidance to Asia country offices for the design implementation, monitoring, evaluation and documentation of education components of Save the Children's (SC) programs for children ages 6 -14. S/he will focus primarily on supporting Save the Children's programming in Asia, but will be an integral member of a team of education and child development experts based both regionally and in our US headquarters, and will ultimately be a key player in contributing to our overall goal of helping children learn and develop to their full potential. S/he will play a key role in the implementation of SC's global education strategy.
The Basic Education and Literacy Specialist will work closely with other Education Specialists and Advisors (Basic, HIV/AIDS and Education, Early Childhood Development, Monitoring and Evaluation), and other program departments (HIV/AIDS & Protection, Health and Livelihoods) team members in home and country offices.
This position takes a leadership role in providing TA support to country offices. It provides a critical function to ensure quality control for SC's basic education programming.
Responsibilities
• Act as an integral member of the basic education technical team, providing input into the department's strategic and operational plan • Lead in developing short-term plans and establishing priorities • Represent SC/US as a technical expert to external forums related to Basic Education and Literacy • Provide basic assessment, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation support to country offices. Guide the implementation of Literacy Boost in Asia. • Develop technical guidance for country offices in priority program areas. • Collaborate with technical advisors from other thematic areas to advance cross-sectoral programming approaches that meet the needs of vulnerable children. • Support country offices to build and share evidence, foster EGI linkages, and support program scale-up. • Provide technical support to Sponsorship basic education. • Monitor new development in Basic Education and promote best practices • Represent basic education programs and innovations to diverse audiences externally and internally (e.g., program learning groups and internal working groups • Collaborate with Save the Children International partners to develop basic education materials and best practices • Help identify new funding opportunities • Lead the writing and review of proposals • Support the maintenance of relationships with donors and partners.
Requirements • Master's degree in education, child development, international development, or other related field
• At least seven years experience in education, preferably in Asia • Experience in program design and proposal development, including private and public donors • Ability to travel up to 40% of the time. • Overall familiarity with education and the challenges facing children in developing countries, with in-depth knowledge in two or more key technical areas (basic education, literacy, safe schools, education in conflict affected states, teacher training, capacity building) • Experience with the development of large(>$1million) proposals for donors, and familiarity with USAID technical requirements • Second language a plus • Competence in Microsoft Office Suite • Commitment to Save the Children's values and understanding of the organization's strategies and programs.
