Director General, Enterprise & Environment

Circa £115,000
Edinburgh

Creating the conditions for Scotland to achieve strong economic growth and environmental sustainability; to make the transition to a low carbon economy; and to bring leadership to the digital agenda across Scotland are pivotal in the Scottish Government’s programme to boost sustainable economic growth and employment and new models of public service provision and community empowerment.

As Director General, you will be the Government’s principal policy adviser on Enterprise & Environment issues and will provide strategic direction on economic, transport and energy policy, relationships with business through to rural, marine and environmental issues and have an overarching responsibility for the digital agenda.

In parallel, you will play a leading and collegiate role, as part of the Scottish Government leadership team, to ensure the overarching ambitious programme of constitutional reform and public service improvement is driven forward, and that organisational capacity and performance is developed. Reporting to the Permanent Secretary and providing support to Ministers, this is a unique opportunity to join the senior team of the Scottish Government at an exciting time for the organisation.

Candidates will be able to demonstrate:

● Outstanding experience at Executive Team or Board level in a comparable policy environment;

● Proven track record of operating, strategically and leading large complex organisations and partnerships at the public-private interface within political accountability environments;

● An understanding of the opportunities offered by the digital revolution, with a clear vision for how to exploit these for Scotland’s benefit; and

● Comparable experience of the strategic economic and environmental challenges facing Scotland and be able to offer a clear vision of how to tackle them in a complex economic climate, at the interface with other broader public policy objectives.
