Assistant Scientist - Computer Science and Instrumentation

The overall purpose of this position is maintaining and updating high quality, validated weather data from IRRI and other sites of scientific interest. This will entail prompt and accurate reporting of weather observations and uses a software tool for QA/QC procedures. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist will disseminate weather data and inform the IRRI community of typhoon threats.

Major accountabilities/Responsibilities

1. Maintains timely and reliable weather database to support IRRI research activities
• Uses software needed in processing and validating weather data
• Encodes and validates climatological data from IRRI and - if needed - other weather stations
• Produces and disseminates weather summary, reports and graphs
• Updates the IRRI community on the weather disturbances entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in view of
possible impacts for IRRI headquarters

2. Upgrades procedures and documentation of weather data recording and its dissemination
• Compiles and consolidates previously recorded weather data from IRRI researchers and other sources
• Explores improved instrumentation for automated recording
• Defines user-friendly formats for weather documentation

3. Updates and displays daily weather bulletins in Climate Unit webpage with forecasts extracted from internet to assist
researchers in scheduling critical field operation

4. Functioning as a back-up to the technician in the Climate Unit in calibration and reading of weather instruments

5. Attends to specific tasks of the Climate Unit in terms of communication and education of IRRI colleagues as well as
personnel from outreach weather stations

Qualification requirements
• BS degree in Computer Science and instrumentation or another relevant subject
• At least 2 years professional experience
• High degree of competence in database management, instrument maintenance and calibration
• Use of standard computer software (MS Office)
• Driving license
