Purpose of the role:

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will have overall management and operational responsibility for all Crisis Group’s programs and offices. S/he will lead the organisation’s planning process and serve as a member of the Senior Management Team.

Specific responsibilities:

• Provides leadership in management of Crisis Group’s programs and offices; • Oversees and coordinates all day to day management matters and acts as Secretary to the Senior Management Team; • Leads Crisis Group’s strategic planning process and annual planning efforts and ensures the implementation of the outcomes of those processes; • Manages the preparation of Crisis Group’s bi-annual organisational work plans; • Leads Crisis Group’s monitoring and evaluation activities; • Together with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and the Chief Development Officer (CDO), develops, implements and manages the operational aspects of the annual budget; • Leads the organisation’s efforts to manage and mitigate on-going and potential risks, with a particular focus on security risks to staff; • Ensures compliance by field offices and staff with Crisis Group’s policies and procedures and with local laws; • Works with the Board of Trustees, presents at Board meetings, administers all matters relating to the Board and Board meetings (with Board governance being the responsibility of the General Counsel); • As required provides high level representation on behalf of Crisis Group and the President to external constituencies, including governments and intergovernmental organisations, donors and civil society groups.

Requirements:

As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must be driven by Crisis Group’s mission. Beyond that, we are seeking a candidate that has proven experience in a leadership position and has a demonstrated ability to lead a group of diverse and talented individuals. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have:

• Significant professional experience with management and operational responsibility. Ideally has experience in an NGO/INGO; • Master’s in a relevant field and/or MBA preferred; • Deep knowledge of international relations required; • Good understanding of field work required and personal experience in the field preferred; • Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team; • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the mission of Crisis Group; • Analytic and sharp decision making skills with the ability to prioritise and communicate to staff key objectives necessary to achieve organizational goals; • Superior written and verbal communication skills in English; multiple languages an asset; • Strong understanding of Finance, HR and Development; • Willingness to travel.
