Americorps Farm To School Nutrition Educators- Mount Horeb Area School District


Overview:
The Mount Horeb Area School District is seeking candidates to fill two AmeriCorps positions. AmeriCorps members will work with the Mount Horeb Area School District to expand the purchase of local seasonal foods in school meal programs and provide student education about fresh seasonal foods.

AmeriCorps members will have three main areas of focus which address the goals of the program. These goals include:
•Aiding school staff in the promotion, procurement, and education of healthy local foods, including creating and maintaining school gardens, to help change the school food environment.
•Serving in a direct capacity teaching nutrition education to students K-12 in the classroom.
•Recruiting and mobilizing volunteers to participate in a F2S committees and program activities.

Members will work with Michelle Denk and farm to school committees to create progress based on an annual plan of work. AmeriCorps members will work primarily with elementary and middle school students, teachers, farmers, food service personnel, parents, and a wide range of community partners including Michelle Denk.

AmeriCorps members will be part of a larger team of 28 AmeriCorps members who implement farm-to-school programs at sites around Wisconsin. Members will report directly to Michelle Denk and will receive training from the DATCP Farm to School AmeriCorps program and guidance from school based committees.

Duties:
The nutrition education will focus on building relationships with teachers and school administrators. They will serve in a direct capacity teaching nutrition education in the classroom and lunchrooms. The nutrition education members will be trained and use the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Standards as a guide to prepare their lesson plans. They will implement the aligned curricula, Nutritious, Delicious Wisconsin, Linking People, Land and Food, and/or Got Veggies?, which aims to teach students about healthy eating choices. The nutrition educator will also be responsible for starting and maintaining school gardens and working with teachers to incorporate garden activities into current classroom curriculum.

The nutrition education member will work closely with the community outreach member to accomplish program goals. Members will be responsible for submitting timesheets on a biweekly basis and monthly reports which track program activities and volunteer mobilization efforts. Monthly reports will be submitted online and will be designed at the beginning of the term of service to reflect your sites activities. Both members will also be responsible for collecting data and disseminating evaluation tools which measure students' attitudes toward fruits and vegetables. Each member will be required to attend a centralized training in the beginning of the program year, attend the opening ceremony and participate in monthly conference calls with the Program Manager.


Required qualifications:
•Passion for inspiring healthful eating among youth and for promoting local agriculture
•Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills in a team setting
•Strong verbal and written communication skills
•Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet software, email programs and ability to
•efficiently perform internet research
•Ability to work independently and proactively
•Ability to provide one's own transportation for work purposes (this will include travel to other school districts)

Desired qualifications:
•Experience in education, nutrition, environmental science, or agriculture
•Experience working with youth in an educational setting
•Volunteer or paid experience with socially, economically and/or ethnically diverse populations
•Experience working with food service in schools, restaurants, or other institutions
•Experience working with farmers
•Skillful in establishing and maintaining professional work relationships
•Experience recruiting and managing volunteers
•Familiarity with graphic design software

Appointment Type:
This is a half-time one-year appointment position, a 900 hour commitment. The position will begin August 15, 2013 and end August 14, 2014. Potential exists for renewing this position for an additional year, subject to funding. Work hours are flexible and will vary based on school start times. Hours will be primarily Monday through Friday but may include occasional evenings and weekends.

Compensation:
AmeriCorps members will receive a modest living allowance totaling $5,700 annually, student loan deferment, and a $2,775 education award at the end of service. Limited reimbursement will be provided for travel to participating communities and training.
