Development Director Kurdish Human Rights Project

Reporting to: Chief Executive

Salary: £26k-£30 depending on experience

KHRP is seeking a strong Development Director to work closely with the Chief Executive as well as the Board and staff in its London-based 6 person office, to build its donor base. This will include, identifying and pursuing diverse funding streams and to increase the charity’s impact and resources through the development and maintenance of external relationships. The post holder will be a generalist who is just as comfortable working on strategy as s/he is writing grant proposals and who has an interest in growing both his/her skill set and those of the charity. The post-holder must be able to respond to any strategic and operational challenges that the charity may face. The Chief Executive will also devote a significant portion of his time to cultivating relationships with key donor prospects.
The Development Director will be the line manager for administrative and finance staff members, and will also work jointly with the Legal Director in taking joint operational decisions for the charity. In addition to full-time staff, the Development Director will manage Development interns and will draw on the support of Board members. There is potential for growth in the Development team in line with an increase in funding opportunities and income. In addition other external resources may be considered as and when required, such as fundraising consultancy

Responsibilities include:
Core Responsibilities
Overall strategy and planning
• Primary responsibility with support from the Chief Executive, Legal Director and Finance Officer, for creating and implementing annual and long-term fundraising strategies, including identifying the means of achieving the agreed-upon annual targets. Taking lead in creating annual fundraising and development action plan based on said strategies and agreed targets
• Identifying new funding opportunities and ensuring key team members and networks are utilized for funding
• Development and maintenance of existing funding relationships
• Ensuring compliance with funder/donor rules and regulations, timelines, performance and financial reports, in close collaboration with the Finance Officer

Maintenance and Strengthening of Relationships with Core Funding Sources
• Grant writing and reporting
• Implementing donor development plans for the portfolio of existing donors and prospects
• Identifying and forging new funding and individual high-donor partnerships and relationships
• Communicating the work of KHRP to existing and prospective supporters
• Coordinate meetings with existing and potential funders and assemble all background information in preparation for meetings.
• Overseeing specific donors/communication history and ensuring that notes and information are fed back into the organization using the database and staff meetings etc
• Co-designing and implementing a plan for developing key external partnerships/ collaborations with specific regard to joint funding/work and profile/ expertise building
• In conjunction with the Administrator and Legal Director, identifying organizational needs

Other Responsibilities
• Undertake meetings with key stakeholders and other NGO’s or institutions to brief them on work of organization and establish links
• Represent organization at conferences, talks and seminars
• Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of KHRP’s work
• Research and implement tools on Salesforce CRM database for development and fundraising
• In conjunction with other relevant staff, co-ordinate round-table discussions, parliamentary hearings and other public education events
• In conjunction with the Office of the Chief Executive and other staff where relevant, co-ordinating arrangements for speaking engagements and identifying key events to promote KHRP’s work.
• Line management of Finance Officer and Administrator

Future Plans/ Responsibilities
• Planning a pledge system and fund appeal timeline to enhance the number of small donors/membership base.
• Designing and implementing an annual events strategy with opportunities to acknowledge existing and target prospective donors.
• Overseeing and take a leading role in all aspects of fundraising events and meetings


Person Specification
The person should have an interest in the work of the KHRP and have a strong desire to contribute to the development of the organization as a whole. S/he should be self-motivated and able to work on their own initiative in co-ordination with the Development and Communications Officer/ development team and the Board of Directors. S/he will have a track record of creating and maintaining successful programs and fundraising strategies and experience of key high-donor relationships.

Essential skills/knowledge
• At least 4 years of fundraising experience, with a focus on governmental, intergovernmental and private-trust funding
• Exceptional analytical, organizational and project management skills
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including evidence of structured thinking and the ability to inspire confidence & enthusiasm in others
• Self-starter with the ability to initiate projects and see them through to successful completion
• Familiarity with current foundation, trust and governmental fundraising landscape and the challenges for NGOs
• Ability to work independently, but also as part of a small team, on different projects
• Computer literate in MS Office, email, and advanced internet research
• Ability to work well under pressure
• Ability to be administratively and secretarially self-sufficient
• Strong interest in getting to understand the work of the Charity
• Track record of delivering concrete results that exceed expectations
• Microsoft Operation packages

Desired skills/knowledge
• Demonstrated practical experience of event organization and running.
• Good understanding and practical experience of the workings of the NGO sector.
• Knowledge of the human rights issues within the Kurdish regions.
• Significant management experience
• A sound and current knowledge of funding streams via the UK, EU and UN
• Knowledge of Salesforce CRM database; Mac and other operating systems;
