Asia Society, the leading global and pan-Asian organization working to strengthen relationships and promote understanding among the people, leaders, and institutions of Asia and the United States, is seeking a Director for its Washington Office. Founded in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller 3rd, the Society is a nonpartisan, nonprofit institution headquartered in New York City and with offices in Hong Kong, Houston, Los Angeles, Manila, Melbourne, Mumbai, San Francisco, Shanghai, Seoul, and Washington, D.C. The Society's mission is to provide insight, generate ideas, and promote collaborative action across the fields of arts and culture, business, education and policy. For more information, visit: www.AsiaSociety.org.Reporting to the Vice President of Global Policy Programs, the Director will play a leading role in developing and expanding the organization's profile and activities in the nations capital, and fully integrating the Office's activities into the Societys global operations.
In carrying out these responsibilities, the Director will:
- Work in close consultation with staff to develop strategies to disseminate and promote key Asia Society policy and education initiatives, and oversee the implementation of these strategies for Washington audiences
- Build and coordinate relationships with relevant government officials and staff in the Administration and Congress, think tanks, NGOs, the business community, academic institutions, and cultural organizations
- Track and advise senior staff on legislative and executive branch developments related to the Society's priority issues; Help develop policy positions and strategies to advance Asia Society positions; Analyze events and write position papers, prepare and distribute reports, and recommend actions for the Society's headquarters
- Establish and run a Congressional outreach program that utilizes Asia Society in-house and associated experts and resources to educate members of Congress and their staff on targeted issues connected to key Asia Society initiatives
- Direct an annual conference that brings Asian leaders to Washington to explore specific issues from an Asian perspective; Organize an annual fundraising dinner in connection with the conference
- Establish a corporate briefing program to educate the Washington-based business community (both American and Asian companies) on Asia-related issues; Establish an embassy outreach series for Asia Society corporate members
- Oversee and maintain the Society's Washington Office facilities; Direct, supervise, recruit and evaluate staff as necessary and as funding permits to carry out the Office's mission; Oversee the Office's finances, help create budgets, review, forecast and track current and upcoming year finances; Monitor and report to the Vice President and the CFO/Vice President for Operations on the budget and other administrative matters; Fundraise in support of the Office's programs and activities
- In coordination with the Society's Communications Department, build relationships with and reach out to members of the DC-based press corps
- Represent the Asia Society at meetings, events and speaking opportunities
Qualification:
Core requirements and competencies:- Graduate degree in a relevant field and a minimum of seven to ten years experience working in Washington's policy community; Deep knowledge of the legislative and executive branches of government; Demonstrated ability to work on a bipartisan or nonpartisan basis and generate policy impact
- Strong background in Asian affairs and international experience; Substantive knowledge of one or more issues of priority to the Society, including, for example, US-Asia relations, sustainable development, education policy, or cultural diplomacy, coupled with an understanding of current legislative issues
- Experience in nonprofit management, including fundraising, institution-building, board development, public/media relations and membership solicitation
- Visionary self-starter with proven project management experience; Highly organized, with strong attention to detail and an entrepreneurial spirit; Resourcefulness, with an orientation to measurable results
- Outstanding verbal, written and overall communications skills; Ability to communicate complex concepts and programs at leadership levels and across multiple fields
- Exceptional interpersonal skills; Ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies, including governmental agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and the private sector
- A team player, able to work closely in consultation with senior management at the Society's headquarters in New York and Centers in the US and Asia
