JOB VACANCY – Regional Human Resources Manager, West and Central Africa

Regional Human Resources Manager, West and Central Africa

This hugely varied role has one clear aim – to work with Regional and Country Management and Leadership to build the capacity of their teams, thereby enabling them to achieve their strategic objectives for vulnerable children. You’ll support the recruitment and development team, develop managerial and technical capacity as well as provide expert advice, guidance and training at all levels. And on a wider note, you’ll participate in the development of global human resources policies and best practices. Your key accountabilities are:

  1. To work with Country Directors to build the capacity of their management teams, and to provide professional leadership to country level HR lead managers, where relevant. This will include providing advice, guidance, and training on structuring key roles in the country management team to best achieve objectives and meet expectations, recruiting and developing managers to fulfil those roles effectively, assessing the performance of their managers, developing their strengths and tackling underperformance, succession planning for key management roles, handling difficult grievance and disciplinary issues with country managers; staff communications and employee relations.

  2. To support the Regional Director in the recruitment and development of Country Directors in the region, of the regional management team, and in the running of the regional office.

  3. To develop managerial and technical capacity within the region, to meet regional needs and to contribute to global capacity. This will include monitoring “benchstrength” across the region, Identifying emerging skill or capacity gaps, and developing plans to address them, working with relevant specialists at Headquarters.

  4. To set up and maintain processes to enable rapid deployment of people from within and outside the region in response to major emergencies arising within the region.

  5. To promote and monitor compliance with key people-related policies, processes, and standards within the country programmes in the region, and the regional office, recommending and tracking remedial action when necessary. This will include promoting and monitoring understanding and compliance with:
    • Save the Children employment policies and core standards, and national employment laws • Save the Children child protection policies and standards • Save the Children staff security policies and standards • Save the Children health and safety policies and core standards, and national health and safety legislation for employers

  6. To participate in the development of global HR policies and standards and the spread of best practice across regions and Alliance members, as a senior member of the global HR team.

To excel, you’ll need five years of senior HR experience within an international organisation, support wide-ranging and well-developed HR and business skills. You must be tactful, diplomatic and culturally sensitive, with the ability to work effectively and contribute as part of a senior management team. Creative problem solving and influencing skills are essential too and you must also be willing and able to travel frequently, mostly within the region. The ability to fluently speak and write both English and French is a must.
