Zimbabwe Country Director

International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND Since the start of its operations in 2009 in Zimbabwe, International Medical Corps has established a community-based emergency health and water and sanitation (WASH) program that benefits more than 220,000 people living in Mashonaland Central Province.

JOB SUMMARY The primary function of the Country Director is to source funding and ensure appropriate coordination of in-country activities and effective program implementation. S/he will spend a significant portion of time on business development and expansion. S/he will also act as the major liaison with donor organizations, other international and national coordination mechanisms, and government bodies.

Management 1. Manage business development activities and secure additional program funding. 2. Effectively oversee project activities, including planning, implementation, financial management, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting. 3. Communicate and work closely with regional team members at headquarters offices, as well as ensure thorough communication with team members on the ground. 4. Coordinate activities with consortium partners and implementing organizations; seek out possible future partnerships in country. 5. Work closely with governmental and community authorities. 6. Oversee the preparation of strategic work plans and budgets. 7. Ensure program implementation is consistent with program goals, donor and internal regulations, and local laws. 8. Oversee the production of reports and ensure the timeliness and accuracy of information provided.

Representation 1. Represent IMC and liaise with local and national authorities, UN, NGO, and donor agencies to facilitate the successful coordination of activities. 2. Work closely with donors to develop and maintain optimum financial and programmatic relationships. 3. Participate in donor meetings and communicate relevant information to HQ and appropriate team members on the ground. 4. Represent IMC at task force meetings, assessment missions, and coordination meetings. 5. Interface with national government and relevant agencies to ensure mutual understanding of activities and maximize resources. 6. More generally, the Country Director is expected to contribute to the creation of a positive image and overall credibility of IMC as an organization, notably through the application of IMC’s mandate, ethics, values and stand-point with regard to other actors.

Human Resources 1. Assist with the recruitment and selection of qualified staff, recommend promotions, disciple and terminate staff, as necessary, in consultation with supervisors. 2. Make frequent site visits to areas of intervention to ensure that activities are being appropriately implemented. 3. Maintain open lines of communications between field staff. 4. Advocate for the professional development of expat and national staff. 5. Oversee the recruitment, training, and supervision of staff.

LANGUAGES 1. Must be able to read, speak, and write English fluently. 2. Strong writing and speaking abilities. 3. Ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions from senior managers in the field and HQ, donors, implementing partners, consortium members, government and community authorities, well as other relevant stakeholders.
