Herbert Smith Professorship of English Private Law

The University of Oxford intends to make an election to the Herbert Smith Professorship of English Private Law, in the Faculty of Law, with effect from a date to be agreed with the successful candidate.

The Oxford Faculty of Law is a major centre for the study of English private law, and has an extraordinary community of more than thirty academics in permanent posts, teaching and writing in subjects across the law of obligations and property. The strength and depth of research in the Faculty are particularly reflected in the array of excellent private law graduate courses for the BCL and MJur including Conflict of Laws, Philosophical Foundations of the Common Law, Restitution of Unjust Enrichment, and Commercial Remedies.

The Herbert Smith Professor of English Private Law will be a leader in scholarship and teaching in one or more of the core private law subjects. He or she will be expected to play a major role, on behalf of the University of Oxford, in nurturing and developing the intellectual climate of legal studies, by publication and teaching, and by participation in the wider scholarly life of the subject.
