The T.M.C. Asser Instituut is a leading inter-university research institute based in The Hague, ‘City of Peace, Justice and Security’. Its activities focus on public/private international and European law. The institute’s international staff conducts both academic and contract research, organises conferences and postgraduate courses, undertakes training and consultancy activities and operates its own publishing house. With a total staff of some fifty persons, the institute is a dynamic hub in The Hague with a global network of partners.

The T.M.C. Asser Instituut, together with its stakeholder universities, has organised its research activities in four inter-university research programmes. Each programme has its own governance structure and a programme coordinator who plays a significant role in making a success of the inter-university research cooperation. International and European sports law, an inter-disciplinary area of research, was pioneered by the institute through its ASSER International Sports Law Centre (http://www.sportslaw.nl). The Centre forms the focal point for an expanding (inter)national network of research organisations and researchers and publishes its own journal.

Senior Researcher in International and European Sports law (Full-time)
(Envisaged starting date: In the period 1 January - 1 March 2012)

Your opportunities

  • You will become a member of the institute’s international research staff;
  • You will be responsible for providing substantive leadership to the sports law cluster (4 persons) at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut, under the supervision of the Head of the Department of Research;
  • You will conduct high-level academic research as part of the research programme;
  • You will join the academic coordinator on the board of the inter-university research programme on international and European sports law;
  • Externally, you will represent both the sports law cluster and the research programme as the Director of the ASSER International Sports Law Centre;
  • You will be a member of the editorial board of the International Sports Law Journal;
  • You will publish in and give presentations at international fora;
  • You will acquire and carry out contract research, consultancy and training activities;
  • You will maintain and further develop an international network of experts.

Your profile

  • You are a legal scholar, have defended your PhD in the area of international and/or European sports law and have professorial qualities;
  • You are interested in further developing the Asser International Sports Law publication programme;
  • You have a good general knowledge of international and European law;
  • You have a proven track record in academic research in the above-mentioned domains;
  • You are able to critically read and comment on research reports, publications and project and research proposals;
  • You are willing to excel in the area of personal research activities;
  • You are open to carrying out interdisciplinary research activities;
  • You have a strong external orientation and are familiar with the various instruments for knowledge dissemination as a means of profiling both the organisation and the individual researcher;
  • You have excellent reporting, writing and presentation skills;
  • You are willing to invest in building and maintaining a growing research network;
  • You have experience in acquiring and carrying out second and/or third money stream funded projects;
  • You have an excellent command of English. Knowledge of Dutch is appreciated;
  • You are able to work in a research team involving junior and senior colleagues and can organise your own activities;
  • You are able to handle stress and respect deadlines.

Our offer
We offer an employment as full-time senior researcher for 1 year, renewable for a period of up to 6 years. The Institute is affiliated with the University of Amsterdam, whose conditions of employment are applicable. The salary will be in accordance with the CAO of the Dutch Universities and depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The gross yearly salary (including holiday pay and an extra monthly payment) will be between €44.589 and €69.361.
