Call for Candidates for DST/NRF SARChI Research Chair
The aim of the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) is to strengthen scientific research leadership and capacity in South African universities, in order to strengthen the development of a knowledge-based economy in South Africa. The University of the Western Cape (UWC) was awarded a number of Tier 1 Research Chairs and is hereby calling for candidates to fill this prestigious position for the following Chair:
Earth Observation Applications for Water Resources Assessment and Management
The Research Chair will be an internationally renowned scholar who will lead research in more than one of the following applications:
• Monitoring, analysing, and quantifying components of the water cycle • Monitoring/Modelling real or near-real time surface and/or subsurface hydrological processes • Analysing interactions of land surface and atmospheric processes • Investigating wetland dynamics • Monitoring, forecasting and managing flooding and droughts • Monitoring land use/cover change and impact on hydrological processes • Determining effects of human activities on both the quantity and quality of water • Developing products for use in integrated water resources management.
The Chair will also be expected to supervise postgraduate students, advise on the incorporation of recent developments in earth observation and geo-information science into curricula, and participate in national and regional initiatives aimed at developing the capacity for using earth observation for decision-making in water resources management. The Chair should have sound knowledge of data integration for water and environmental analysis.
