Basic purposeThe successful candidate will develop and lead a research program on innovative approaches for insect pest management in the intensified and diverse irrigated rice ecosystems of South and Southeast Asia. The research will contribute to Theme 3 of the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP): " Ecological and sustainable management of rice-based production systems." The focus will be on insect-rice varietal interactions, including the role of disease vectors, and management practices to reduce insect/ arthropod damage in high-productivity rice systems through development and promotion of strategies that increase ecosystem resilience. He/She will collaborate closely with agronomists, breeders, pest management specialists, and others working on integrated solutions for future rice-based cropping systems. He/She will generate principles and decision tools for knowledge dissemination to researchers and professional extension staff, and also develop materials for policy advocacy.
Roles and responsibilitiesMajor Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
• Lead research on the effects of new technologies and production methods (pesticide use, direct seeding, rice varieties, intensification, diversification, etc.) on insect pest populations in rice in order to promote rice ecosystem productivity and resilience. The research emphasis will be the systematic development of principles and converting these into new and practical decision tools for technology dissemination (GRiSP Product Line 3.1 and 3.2).
• Contribute to interdisciplinary studies (including other pest management specialists, agronomists, breeders, information technologists) to evaluate the impact of changes in production practices on pest populations in intensive irrigated and rainfed environments, and to identify strategies to reduce losses due to insect pests.
• Collaborate with NARES colleagues in joint research activities and dissemination of information on pest management.
• Undertake capacity building and training in entomology and pest ecology.
• Develop new projects together with IRRI colleagues, ARIs, and NARES in South and Southeast Asia.
• Represent IRRI's pest management and natural resource management research to a wide audience by presenting at international conferences/meetings, having papers published in international journals, and communicating with various stakeholders and decision makers.
• Lead a research team at IRRI headquarters and fulfill various professional services for the institute.


Qualification requirements:
• PhD in entomology, pest ecology, or relevant field
• At least 3 years postgraduate research experience; strong publication record; 
• Strong background in field oriented research and extension activities; 
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
• Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment;
• Fluent in oral and written English; 
• International research in collaboration with NARES and other partners.
