Fisheries Expert

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has received funds from the African Development Bank (AfDB) which funds are to support the IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI) and implement the IDDRSI Strategy. 

The Secretariat intends to use part of the funds to recruit a Fisheries Expert for purpose of building capacity and re-enforcing management of the IGAD Secretariat in implementing the IDDRSI Strategy. 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals from the IGAD region for the following position tenable at the IGAD Secretariat in Djibouti.

Duration of the assignment: The initial appointment will be for twelve months (12). with possibility ofextension will be subject to performance and availability of funds. 


1.    Job Summary
The Fisheries Expert will assist the IGAD Secretariat in general and the IDDRSI Platform Coordination Unit in particular to effectively discharge their responsibilities. The specific duties and responsibilities of the Fisheries Expert are indicated below. 

2.    Core duties and responsibilities:
•    Assist in drafting regular and adequate reports  on the Fisheries (both marine and fresh water fisheries) production against indicators of intervention progress and achievements in the region
•    Contribute to the preparation of the annual workplan, quarterly and annual Fisheries reports of IDDRSI projects and programs 
•    Facilitate the collection, collation and dissemination of Fisheries sector  information and distribute this information through the IDDRSI and  IGAD websites and other media
•    Support IGAD Secretariat and memebr states in the formulation of Fisheries programs, harmonization of policies and strategies. 
•    Liaise with ministries, local authorities, UN agencies and NGO’s and other stakeholders regarding gathering and management of data of fisheries related activities.
•    Develop and monitor  IGAD regional  fisheries programmes in collaboration with partners and facilitate  prompt and effective information sharing among stakeholders. 
•    In collaboration with the IGAD Research and M&E units, collaborate in the Fisheries related research and support the performances of the field-based research and M and E personnel.
•    Develop strategies for environmental impact assessment and sociocultural impact of all Fisheries resorces management  interventions.
•    Undertake any tasks, within his/her field of activity that the coordinator and program manager may entrust to him/her. 
3.    Minimum Qualification and Experience
(a)    Essential requirements
•    Post graduate  Degree in Fisheries and/ or Aquaculture  
•    Five or more years experience in national, regional and international organizations .
•    Working experience in the IGAD region member states in similar capacities a definite advantage.
(b)     Desirable requirements  
•    Knowledge and skill in Fisheries and Aquaculture resources.
•    A good knowledge of computer applications 
•    Communication skill
•    Training skill
•    Ability to prepare concise, timely  and informative reports 
•    Fluency in English     
•    Knowledge of French is an advantage
