The European Central Bank together with the national central banks constitute the Eurosystem, the central banking system of the euro area. The main objective of the Eurosystem is to maintain price stability and to safeguard the value of the euro.

The ECB is seeking an Economist for its Directorate Risk Management (D/RM). D/RM is responsible for developing and maintaining the risk management framework for all of the ECB’s financial market operations, and for monitoring, assessing and proposing improvements to the Eurosystem’s operational framework for monetary and foreign exchange policy implementation from a risk management perspective. It also provides content and secretariat services to the Eurosystem’s Risk Management Committee.

D/RM comprises a multicultural team of highly skilled professionals working in two divisions: the Risk Strategy Division and the Risk Analysis Division. The successful candidate will join the Risk Strategy Division, which is responsible mainly for designing, evaluating and improving the ECB’s risk management policies and frameworks.

The successful applicant will be entrusted with some, or all, of the following main tasks:

• conducting credit assessment of structured finance transactions, including the implementation of appropriate default and cash-flow modelling on the basis of loan-level data files;

• developing and evaluating asset valuation frameworks for structured credit and other debt instruments used as collateral in monetary policy operations;

• carrying out risk management projects in the area of structured finance instruments and markets in close interaction with market participants and Eurosystem representatives;

• preparing and drafting proposals on topics related to risk management of investment and monetary policy operations, for submission to the ECB’s Executive Board and Governing Council, as well as to the Risk Management Committee.



Applicants must have the following knowledge and competencies:

• master’s university degree in finance, economics or a quantitative field such as mathematics or statistics; • significant securitisation analysis experience gained at either a bank, a financial services company, a rating agency or a regulatory authority;

• ideally, experience in designing and structuring asset-backed securities;

• ideally, experience in credit analysis of covered bonds; • ideally, knowledge of programming languages, e.g. MATLAB or VBA, or of database management;

• advanced English with a proven ability to draft clear and structured proposals on complex topics;

• a good knowledge of at least one other official language of the European Union;

• a working knowledge of MS Office, in particular Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
