Gender Equality Specialist - Social Development Group

Cowater International Inc. is a Canadian private-sector international development and management consulting firm, based in Ottawa, with experience managing and implementing projects in more than 60 countries worldwide. We currently are seeking a Gender Equality (GE) Specialist to guide the achievement of gender results and indicators in various Cowater projects.  The GE Specialist will provide support to Project Team Leadersand the Cowater Management Team. 
Responsibilities/Duties:
Existing Projects 
  • Review gender equality strategies and other relevant documents for existing projects;
  • Using the gender equality strategy on each project as a starting point, recommend revisions/updates to ensure that expected results are achievable within project timeframes and activities are appropriate;
  • Facilitate agreement among project stakeholders on gender equality strategies (revised as necessary and appropriate);
  • Support implementation of gender equality strategies (both from HQ and in the field); 
  • Work with field staff and stakeholders to identify gender priorities, activities, and roles and responsibilities;
  • Assess the effectiveness of existing structures and personnel to meet each project's gender equality results and provide necessary recommendations;
  • Recommend format for reporting on gender results in each project's narrative reports to the donor;
  • Determine what can be used as baseline data for monitoring progress towards gender equality, using quantitative and qualitative indicators; and
  • As required, conduct field visit to communities in counties of assignment.
New Projects
  • Support company-wide business development initiatives, including proposal development, strategic visioning and networking; and
  • Develop gender equality strategies/activities, budgeting and staffing needs for new proposals and new projects in a wide range of sectors. 
Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or equivalent in International Development Studies, Gender Studies, or related discipline;
  • At least 10 years of experience in developing gender strategies for development projects and programs;
  • Experience using gender analysis tools to monitor and evaluate projects and programs; and
  • Familiarity with and experience in quantitative and qualitative participatory research methods.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent writing skills (reports, workplans, proposals);
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • English essential. Other languages (ie. French, Spanish, bahasa Indonesia) would be an asset.
