Job Description
BACKGROUND:
Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.
GENERAL FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of the Senior Vice President, the Business Manager’s primary responsibility is monitoring, supporting and analyzing the project portfolio’s financial performance. In addition, the Business Manager provides high-level administrative support to the programs within the Internews Center for Innovation and Learning (ICIL) and Global Initiatives (GI) departments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned:
Corporate (30%)
• Provides regular reports and analysis to management.
• Serves as ICIL/GID escalation contact for Admin/Accounting/HR to resolve transactional business process issues and region specific support issues.
• Assists SVP/SD in facilitating monthly ICIL/GID operational review meetings and project review meetings.
• Other duties as assigned.
Programmatic (70%)
• Provides analytical/financial support to ICIL Senior VP and GI Senior Director.
• Prepares departmental and program budgets, projections and financial reports.
• Develops systems for tracking staff charging across multiple budgets.
• Assists ICIL/GID staff with proposal budget development for new and existing projects and modifications of current budgets.
• Supports VP/Project Directors in start-up phases of new projects including launch and admin and operations systems-building in the field.
• Manages ICIL/GID sub-grants and contracts.
• Works closely with project accountants in the field during project development/handover-to-field, provides training and orientation as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Relevant university degree required in accounting and business admin; Masters in related area preferred or equivalent in experience
• At least 5 years experience with non-profit project and portfolio management as well as developing or supporting USAID funded programs
• Minimum 5 years programmatic experience in relevant non-profit
• Experience with financial analysis, accounting, bookkeeping and financial management
• Budget development experience
• Familiarity with Internews finance and admin systems a significant asset.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills including diplomacy, tact, and the ability to negotiate
• Excellent communication skills: speaking, writing, and listening
• Proven ability to set priorities and manage time effectively
• Proven analytical and problem-solving ability
• Proven ability to work both independently and as an effective team member
• Proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple on-going assignments
• Proficient in MS Office, excel, and budget analysis
• Able and willing to travel to the field, and sometimes work in challenging conditions/environments
