Summary

The International Association of Professionals in Humanitarian Assistance and Protection (PHAP) is recruiting a qualified volunteer to assist the Finance and Administration Manager for the summer 2014 at its headquarters in Brussels, on a full-time basis, for a period of 2-3 months. As an integral part of a small and dynamic professional team, the Finance and Administration Volunteer will assist in the preparation of the annual audit and the year-end financial statements. This volunteer position is ideal for someone pursuing an undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or business management.

About PHAP

The International Association of Professionals in Humanitarian Assistance and Protection (PHAP) is the first and only sector-wide professional association of individuals engaged in humanitarian assistance and protection worldwide. Its global member network encompasses the full spectrum of institutional affiliations and professional backgrounds in the humanitarian sector. Established in mid-2010, PHAP’s mission is to enhance the humanitarian sector’s ability to respond effectively and professionally to current and future crises, including natural disasters, armed conflict situations, and other complex emergencies. To this end, it pursues the following strategic objectives: build capacity of professionals to assist and protect vulnerable populations; distill professional knowledge and disseminate good practices for humanitarian action; create a space for reflection and exchange on policy issues within the humanitarian sector; cultivate networks and provide services to further the professional, social, and personal development of its members.

Conditions

Starting date: To be discussed 
Duration: Summer of 2014 - 2-3 months 
Based in Brussels 
Full-time schedule of five days (38 hours) per week 
Unpaid position

Responsibilities

  • Processing and reconciling data;
  • Researching issues and organizing information;
  • Consolidating data from multiple sources and validating accuracy of the data for projects and training events;
  • Assisting in closing the books and preparing the year-end financial statements;
  • Preparing year-end inventory;
  • Performing general administrative duties.
Depending on interests and background of the recruited candidate, the following responsibilities might also be involved:
  • Updating existing planning and management tools;
  • Creating new planning and management tools;
  • Assisting in developing internal policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • The candidate should be working towards a degree in business management, finance, or a related field;
  • Highly self-motivated — eager to learn and make a positive impact;
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of finance and accounting;
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Attention to details and ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Very good knowledge of both English and French is required;
  • Strong MS Office skills (especially Excel).
