Job Summary

​Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development (Pacific Women) was announced by the Australian Prime Minister at the Pacific Island Leaders’ Forum meeting in August 2012.  It commits up to $320 million over 10 years in the 14 Pacific Islands Forum member countries.
The overarching goal of Pacific Women is to improve the opportunities for political, economic and social advancement of Pacific Women.
 
Pacific Women has seven key result areas:
  • Improve women’s leadership and decision-making opportunities
  • Increase economic opportunities for women
  • Reduce violence against women and expanding support services
  • Enhance the evidence base to inform policy and practice
  • Strenghten women's groups and coalitions for change
  • Support attitudinal change towards gender equality and women's agency
  • Improve gender outcomes in education and health.
The Communications Officer will support the Pacific Women program by delivering a range of high quality communications reports, articles and other material. The Communications Officer will work closely with other members of the Program team to ensure s/he has a good understanding of all Program activities, and is able to identify new opportunities to promote Pacific Women. S/he will provide formal and informal advice, mentoring and training on communications issues to Program partners or other stakeholders, as required.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications Officer will undertake the specific responsibilities described below.
  • Support the implementation of the communications strategy, including through drafting documents and disseminating information provided by DFAT
  •  Liaise with Oceanic to manage the Pacific Women website.  This will include reviewing and updating information, uploading relevant material for shared learning purposes and using creative ways to ensure lively discussions/debates;
  •  Maintain regular contact with DFAT Post Communication Officers and Pacific Women Stakeholders to ensure new content and stories are unloaded onto the Pacific Women website.
  • Prepare succinct and clear communication materials for Pacific Women website and other publications and media.
Duties may be varied from time to time by the Inception Hub Coordinator to meet changing program needs.

Other Requirements

​Selection Criteria
  • A post-secondary qualification in communications, journalism, marketing or other relevant discipline, and minimum of five years' experience working in a communications role.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of different individuals and organisations.
  • Outstanding copy-writing and editing skills, with experience writing a range of material for print and online publication.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for working with electronic media, particularly websites, online forums and social networking media.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, as part of a small team and independently.
  • Experience working on donor funded programs (preferable).
