Online Writer/Editor, New York

Tracking Code 332-427
Job Description
The Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. (NRDC) is a leading nonprofit environmental group with more than 1.2 million members and online activists. We have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Montana, and Beijing, and a staff of over 430 including lawyers, scientists, and policy analysts, all working to protect the environment and public health.
Position Summary: The NRDC Editorial Department seeks a versatile writer and editor to create fresh and vibrant content across our digital channels, using explanatory and personal service journalism as the models for revitalizing our online communications strategy and reaching new audiences. Your writing will market our organization's people, programs, and priorities and help build broad public support for NRDC-crafted solutions to the world's toughest environmental problems.
You should bring a proven track record of crafting persuasive, succinct, clearly written material while successfully juggling multiple priorities and deadlines. Your output will include a wide range of public-facing content—everything from explainers and expert profiles to infographic text and video or podcast scripts. Although most of your work will be written from an institutional point of view, you will help us establish a new, highly accessible voice for NRDC in the digital space that appeals to a modern audience of active and highly engaged media consumers. If you're excited by explanatory journalism startups like Vox, FiveThirtyEight, and the New York Times' Upshot, then you'll appreciate what we've got planned for NRDC.org.
Responsibilities:
  • Write engaging digital content for multiple NRDC platforms and products, including explainers, video and podcast scripts, infographic text, data visualizations, how-to guides, and other solutions-oriented material.
  • Help conceive and create new outreach opportunities in the digital space, including apps, games, e-books, and other creative solutions to broadening our audience.
  • Manage the homepage and other high-trafficked content areas of NRDC.org, making them responsive to breaking news and keeping us engaged on the topics dominating the national conversation.
  • Attend daily Editorial Department news meetings and long-term editorial planning sessions, contributing ideas and strategizing fresh content approaches.
  • Write weekly marketing newsletter.
  • Collaborate with NRDC's designers, producers, campaigners, social media marketers, and others on joint creation and promotion of editorial products.
  • Monitor NRDC expert blogs, issue papers, scientific reports, and other materials for digital content opportunities.
  • Help create Communications Division presentations and marketing materials for internal and external audiences.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree or greater.
  • At least five years of writing and strategic messaging experience, preferably in a relevant field like nonprofit communications, political campaigning, or digital journalism.
  • Strong editing skills and attention to detail, including impeccable grammar and spelling.
  • Dynamite project management skills.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work on tight deadlines.
  • Comfort in a data-driven, analytical environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint as well as standard website content management systems and basic knowledge of HTML.
  • An understanding of NRDC's mission and goals; environmental experience a plus.
To apply, please create a profile and upload your resume and cover letter. Also provide urls for 3-5 clips, projects, or publications you've worked on, with an explanation of your role and what each demonstrates about your abilities or experience. No phone calls or faxes.
