The Commission's priority is eliminating racial health inequities. All bureaus and programs are now working to ensure that social and racial justice values and practices are implemented throughout the Commission's culture.

Position Overview

The fellow will serve as an integral team member working closely with the Director of Accreditation and Quality Improvement, the Director of the Community Initiatives Bureau, and the Director of the Prevention Wellness and Trust Fund. The fellow’s two primary responsibilities will be:
1) Serve as a core member on the coordinating team of the three-year Boston Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund Project funded by the Massachusetts Legislature, and managed through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The project aims to reduce health care costs by preventing chronic conditions in hypertension, pediatric asthma, and elder falls. The project is carried out through a collaboration between Boston Public Health Commission, seven Community Health Centers, and nine Community-Based Organizations serving the residents of low-income communities in Roxbury and North Dorchester
2) Serve as a core member of the Accreditation and Quality Improvement (AQI) core team, consisting of the Director of AQI and a Project Coordinator. The fellow will also play a significant role in the AQI Coordinating Committee consisting of representatives from each of BPHC’s six bureaus. Core responsibilities will be to support the leadership of AQI in getting the Commission accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board. This includes supporting Commission staff in building awareness and knowledge on the accreditation process, supporting key steps in the accreditation process, and building an organization-wide culture of quality improvement

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an integral member in the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund Project Coordinating Team and in the Accreditation and Quality Improvement Core Team in achieving Accreditation for the Public Health Department under the leadership of the Director of Accreditation and Quality Improvement
  • Support the Commission to achieving public health department accreditation, which includes building awareness and knowledge among Commission staff of the accreditation process, and preparing for and supporting the Public Health Accreditation Board accreditation site visit
  • Support building an organization-wide culture of quality improvement, which includes carrying out staff trainings, presentations, analyzing data, drafting reports, research, etc.
  • Support Health Equity and Racial Justice priorities for Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund
  • Quality Improvement support for clinical and community partners supporting practice improvement, process and quality measure goal setting, and using Quality Improvement tools with partners, such as Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA), 5 Why Analysis, Fishbone Diagram, Standardizing Workflows, and Process Flows
  • Support project reporting and evaluation, including quarterly reports and annual reports
  • Support data solutions for documenting “community aggregated data” for clinical interventions
  • Develop and/or identify resources to improve or provide access to quality healthcare for vulnerable Boston residents
  • Ensure effective collaboration and communications with community health centers or agencies, as well as city and state agencies
  • Prepare reports, newsletters, and other publications as needed
  • Administer surveys and compile results
  • Attend relevant meetings, internal working groups, and related trainings

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree*
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in community health assessment, program planning/development, program management, and/or program evaluation*
  • Familiarity with models of health outcomes based on social determinants of health, and the role of policy, environmental, and systems changes in health behavior change*
  • Knowledge of primary care and health care delivery systems in the United States*
  • Excellent writing skills with experience writing reports, grants, issue papers, and related documents*
  • Excellent analytic skills, including ability to understand, and interpret quantitative and qualitative data*
  • Excellent communication skills, including speaking publicly and within teams*
  • Ability to work effectively with a team approach to program management
  • Committed to promoting racial and social justice and health equity
  • Intermediate or higher level skill in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet Explorer
  • Ability to perform under pressure

Fellowship Logistics

During the fellowship year, all fellows are provided with:
  • A pre-tax living stipend of $1100/month
  • Housing and utilities
  • Health insurance
  • A professional development grant of $600
  • An award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year
  • Travel costs covered to and from placement site, training and retreats
Living and Working in the US: Fellows are provided with basic housing and a utilities stipend during the fellowship year. GHC coordinates housing for fellows placed in the United States in shared apartments or houses that meet GHC's safety standards. Housing arrangements are assigned prior to departure from Training Institute. Fellows at the Boston Public Health Commission will be housed in Boston, an urban city in the northeastern United States.
