Senior Development Specialist - Agriculture Extension and Technology Transfer

IRRI has successfully transformed its irrigated rice breeding program from a highly traditional pedigree program that delivered little genetic gain for yield into a modern, rapid-cycle product development pipeline. This transformation required the fundamental reorganization of IRRI’s breeding and research management processes, and is on track to deliver much higher rates of genetic gain to farmers in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The project is known as Transformative Rice Breeding (TRB).
The purpose of this position is to transfer the TRB knowledge and know how to BRRI (Bangladesh Rice Research Institute and 3 Eastern, Indian national agricultural research and extension system (NARES) partners. The incumbent needs to transfer highly focused product concepts, a shift from pedigree breeding to rapid generation advance, much greater selection intensity for yield in multi-location trials, and selection decision support through marker-assisted and genomic selection. This will require increased access to and knowledge of new breeding technology, product design methods, germplasm, traits, genotyping services, and information management systems. The project will be supported by the IRRI-TRB and BRRI-TRB project, and will be provided baseline evaluation support by the University of Queensland Breeding Program Assessment Tool team.
This position is based at IRRI Country Office in New Delhi or Hyderabad, India. Globally Recruited Staff benefits can be found here.
