Launched by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at the September 2010 Millennium Development Goal Summit, the 1,000 Days partnership focuses international attention on the crisis of maternal and child undernutrition in the developing world and encourages support for proven, high impact nutrition interventions that can help save lives and improve long-term global health and development. The partnership serves as a challenge to the global community to act on and invest in improving nutrition within the critical 1,000 day window of opportunity from pregnancy to 2 years of age. 1,000 Days is a time-bound and results-oriented effort, designed to facilitate partnerships among governments, civil society organizations and the private sector in the 1,000 days between September 2010 and June 2013. It is also meant to leverage the implementation of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Framework and Roadmap.

The 1,000 Days hub was created to support the 1,000 Days partnership and serves as an advocacy and communication platform to help mobilize U.S.-based civil society, private sector and government constituents to take action toward improving maternal and child nutrition in the developing world. The hub, organized by InterAction and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), in close collaboration with the U.S. Department of State, promotes action and investment from partners across the nutrition, food security and agriculture, health, social protection sectors, among others, and builds advocates for improving nutrition during the 1,000 day window of opportunity. InterAction holds fiduciary responsibility for the 1,000 Days hub.

Position Overview

• Build 1,000 Days champions within the U.S.-based nongovernmental organization (NGO) community in order to foster greater cross-sectoral collaboration and to build U.S. public and political will in support of nutrition investments in the 1,000 day window of opportunity.
• Full-time, two-year contract in Washington, D.C., reporting to 1,000 Days Director

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain solid relationships with the staff of 1,000 Days stakeholder NGOs to foster greater awareness of and resource investment in proven nutrition interventions during the 1,000 day window of opportunity.
• Help build and manage a working group comprised of key representative from U.S.-based NGOs working across the nutrition, food security and agriculture, health, gender, waters/sanitation/hygiene (WASH) and social protection sectors.
• Provide substantive support to working group constituents, especially with respect to education and awareness-building about the impact and cost-effectiveness of 1,000 days interventions.
• Track and promote opportunities for greater cross-collaboration in policy & advocacy, communications and field implementation as appropriate.
• Track and promote targeted policy and advocacy efforts to undergird U.S. Government funding for nutrition and target U.S. Government investments toward the 1,000 day window of opportunities.
• Share information about Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) activities with the working group and other constituents.
• Share information about private sector investments and partnerships in maternal and infant nutrition with the working group and other constituents.
• Manage preparations for 1,000 Days events coordinating with partners, consultants, and the 1,000 Days Director.
• Assist in facilitating in-country partnerships.
• Represent 1,000 Days at key meetings, panels, and conferences.
• Support the development of implementation-related content and NGO partner blog posts for thousanddays.org.
• Support ongoing monitoring of 1,000 Days activities and grant reporting.

Qualification:

• Strategic thinker and leader with at least 5 years of policy and advocacy experience in international development.
• Extensive knowledge of and experience working with the U.S. international development nongovernmental sector and leading U.S. government advocacy efforts.
• Understanding of the cross-sectoral nature of nutrition and the underlying causes of undernutrition.
• Demonstrated capacity to build and lead coalitions to achieve a common objective.
• Experience working in one or more of the following areas: global nutrition, food security and agriculture, health, gender, water/sanitation/hygiene (WASH) or social protection.
• Strong written and oral communication abilities.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in international relations or a related field.
