Director, Climate Action (GRADE AD14) European Commission

The European Commission is looking to recruit a Director, Climate Action (GRADE AD14) COM/2011/10313 to be based in Brussels, Belgium

With around 60 staff and a budget of €10 million, the Mainstreaming Adaptation and Low Carbon Technology Directorate has the vital mission of developing and implementing policies in the areas of energy, transport, industrial gases and climate change mitigation. Central to the attainment of Europe’s 2020 strategy, you will provide overall vision and clear guidance in several new policy fields whilst liaising closely with the United Nations.

In particular, you will focus on mitigation and adaptation strategies (especially for ground transport), generate innovative instruments for technology demonstration and, within the European Commission, build close functional relationships with the Directorates-General for Energy, Mobility and Transport, Enterprise and Industry, Research and Innovation, and Regional Policy.

Naturally, you will bring deep understanding of the low carbon and sustainability agenda, coupled with awareness of the broader picture relating to economic growth, innovation and competitiveness. Your high-level experience in relevant roles will have given you thorough knowledge of multilateral environmental agreements and legislation, and you will ideally bring an interest in macroeconomics and cost-benefit analysis. Above all, you are capable of drafting clear and coherent policy, implementing market-based instruments and enforcing evolving laws.
