Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) is a division of Transnet responsible for freight movement across South Africa. We’re looking for a talented individual who is interested in becoming part of the TFR team and improving the movement of rail freight in SA.
Principal Engineer: Technical & Legal

The incumbent will report to the Chief Engineer and will be responsible for technical and legal compliance of the different sections within the Rail Network (Act 85, Act 16, SANS Regulations, etc).
Principal Accountabilities: • Management of a mechanical inspectorate function for Transnet • Co-ordination and management of technical inputs with regard to MICA (Manual for Infrastructure Condition Assessment) documents, Safety Management System (SMS), NOSA and BOIs (Board of Inquiries) • Fleet management function for the Rail Network Central Office • Lifecycle management of the Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) fleet on a countrywide basis • High-level engineering support and technical guidance in the area of Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) • Technical guidance in the area of small plant and equipment and the lifecycle management thereof • Development of engineering skills and human capital capacity to ensure future sustainability and growth of this engineering area.
Applications are invited from diligent and well-organised candidates who are in possession of a BSc Eng or BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering from a recognised educational institution and are registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Applicants must also have extensive engineering knowledge of and experience in the field of technical systems, root cause analysis and Board of Inquiries, as well as Act 85, Act 16 and the associated SANS standards.
Applicants will undergo a comprehensive assessment process, including a medical examination.
