University Lecturer in the Social Anthropology of Africa

SCHOOL OF ANTHROPOLOGY AND MUSEUM ETHNOGRAPHY in association with St Antony’s College

Grade 10a: Salary £42,733 - £57,431 p.a.

Applications are invited for a University Lecturership in the field of the Social Anthropology of Africa. The post is permanent and full time, tenable from 1 October 2012 and will be offered in conjunction with a non-tutorial fellowship at St Antony’s College. The post will be based at the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, Banbury Road, Oxford.

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out high quality research in the area of the social anthropology of Africa and to contribute to teaching in the School of Anthropology, including lecturing, examining and graduate supervision, pastoral care of graduate students, and assistance with the administration and organisation of teaching and research. As a Fellow of St Antony’s College, the successful candidate will participate in the administration and governance of the College and act as a College Adviser to students.

Applicants should have a doctorate in anthropology or closely related discipline already awarded at the time of application, and have specialised in social and cultural anthropology with a regional interest in Africa. Applicants need evidence of substantial research accomplishment, a future research plan and evidence of the ability to raise research funding to realise the plan. The successful candidate will be able to teach and supervise under/post graduate students effectively and have a good record of collaboration and team work.
