Amnesty International (AI) is at the forefront of eradicating human rights violations related to corporate activity. But in order to act, we need informed strategy based on thorough and irrefutable research. As head of our Business & Human Rights team, you’ll be our global authority in this emerging area.
About the role
Bringing corporations that abuse human rights to account, you’ll lead this dynamic area of work by providing strategic and substantive expert guidance.
You’ll make the voices of populations affected by corporate related human rights abuses from India to the Niger Delta heard.
Focusing primarily on extractive industries, you’ll oversee and implement strategy at the head of a specialist global team.
You’ll provide expert guidance on emerging and future trends relevant to business and human rights, which will affect our work in this area.
You will manage, lead, motivate and develop your team as they analyse information, develop global lobbying and advocacy strategies that will inform Amnesty International as a whole.
That means project managing project development, activities and outputs, and reporting on impact, as well as managing staff work, professional development, schedules and budgets, and providing expert advice to other teams operating at the global, regional and country levels.
You will also be Amnesty International’s leading face on business and human rights, work closely with partners, and represent the organisation externally.
Beyond that, you’ll deliver high quality internal and external reports, review materials, make incisive recommendations that will shape our actions and influence those of global NGOs and represent AI at the highest levels of international government.
About you
Your well-demonstrated and extensive professional experience in working with business and human rights issues and your extensive knowledge of human rights, international and corporate law will be supported by a relevant academic background.
You’ll have proven yourself in leading global strategies and informing coherent policies, project management, setting priorities and managing both people and resources.
You’ll have demonstrated outstanding research, writing, communication and analytical skills gained in a similar role. You’ll be versatile, expecting to lead and also work as a team player.
You’ll be competent in managing competing demands and in responding to a diverse range of requests from within the Secretariat and from other Amnesty International offices.
You’ll certainly be confident in representing AI to international audiences and have the negotiation and relationship-building skills needed to influence individuals and organisations whilst maintaining our reputation as the pre-eminent advocate on business and human rights.
But as well being able to develop and manage global advocacy and campaigns, we’ll expect you to show the astute political judgement and legal expertise needed to inform our actions on the global stage.
