The Department of Earth Sciences teaches and carries out high-profile research in a wide range of Earth Science sub-disciplines. These cover the two main areas of departmental activity, viz. Geology and Environmental Geochemistry. The Department offers an undergraduate programme in each area, trains honours streams in Applied Geology, Petroleum Geology and Environmental Geochemistry, and hosts both masters and doctoral degree students in each of these areas.

This position calls for a dynamic individual with a research interest and/or approach(es) that will complement the departmental goals and the University’s mission statement, and who will contribute to our core teaching in Environmental Geochemistry.

Duties:

All Post Levels
• Undergraduate teaching;
• teaching and supervising honours students;
• supervising research students (MSc and PhD);
• conducting an active research programme and seeking external funding for this (in collaboration with others within and outside the Department);
• publishing research results in accredited, high-impact, international journals;
• participating in the administration of some departmental activities.

Professor/Associate Professor
• Taking a leading role in the research group;
• assisting in building a strong complement of postdoctoral and PhD researchers working in an integrated programme.

Requirements:

All Post Levels
• PhD in an appropriate science discipline.

Professor/Associate Professor
• A record of high-profile publications in leading journals;
• demonstrated ability to attract external research funding;
• demonstrated leadership or the potential to take on a leadership role in an active research group in the general area of environmental geochemistry;
• a record of supervision of Master’s and Doctoral students to successful completion.

Senior Lecturer/Lecturer
• Published research in the general area of environmental geochemistry;
• demonstrated potential to develop an active research programme;
• potential to develop an innovative teaching programme in the area of environmental geochemistry.

Recommendations:

All Post Levels
• An interest and background in low-temperature-pressure geochemistry, global elemental cycling and numerical modelling, marine geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and soil chemistry;
• demonstrated potential to involve students in original research in environmental geochemistry;
• teaching and supervision experience at university level (commensurate with the level of appointment);
• familiarity with the operation and use of state-of-the-art environmental analytical equipment.

Professor/Associate Professor
• An excellent track record of teaching in academia in the relevant field.

Senior Lecturer/Lecturer
• Publications in relevant peer-reviewed, high-impact, international journals;
• Postdoctoral experience in a relevant field.

Commencement of duties: 1 May 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter
