The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) wishes to employ a highly qualified PDF Weed Science who will be based at AfricaRice's East and Southern Africa research station in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Authority
The PDF will focus on elucidating parasite virulence, biology and ecology of important parasitic weeds in rain-fed rice and identifying resistant and tolerant varieties and mechanisms of effective host-plant resistance, leading to the development of acceptable and effective control strategies. She/he will report to the Weed Scientist, working in the Sustainable Productivity Enhancement program. The PDF will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team working to sustain and improve the productivity of rice-based systems in Africa in line with AfricaRice’s mission and mandate.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
  • Lead the Center’s work on parasitic weeds in collaboration with partners from national and international universities and research systems;
  • Investigate parasitic weed biology and ecology and the development of parasite virulence in order to find clues for generating durable control options for resource-poor farmers;
  • Set up, supervise and evaluate multi-locational and multi-seasonal field experiments to screen rice varieties for resistance and tolerance against Striga, to study the development of parasite virulence and the durability of defense mechanisms;
  • Set up and supervise multi-locational and multi-seasonal farmer-participatory trials to test control technologies (including resistant/tolerant rice varieties) and collect farmer assessments of these;
  • Set up an in vitro screening facility (micro rhizotron system) for studies on parasitic weeds on rice;
  • Undertake scientific analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, and other processes essential for publishing and reporting results or findings;
  • Publish and communicate research results in peer-reviewed journals, policy briefs, general interest outlets, and the media;
  • Supervise MSc and PhD students and AfricaRice support staff;
  • Perform any other duties as required by the Center.
Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. degree in Agronomy, Plant Science or a related field;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Scientific publication record is considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of rice production systems in Africa is considered as an asset.
