The Chinese Studies Programme is a new Programme in the Faculty of Humanities, intended to produce graduates who are both competent in Chinese language and familiar with Chinese society and civilisation. The programme will involve close links with Chinese partner institution/s. The University of Botswana is seeking a full or associate professor who will help found the programme and provide academic leadership for its successful development.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) establish and develop the new Programme, including continuous review to improve the initial design; (ii) provide academic leadership and mentorship to staff within the Chinese Studies Programme in line with the vision of the University of Botswana as outlined in relevant policy documents; (iii) lead the Departmental Quality Assurance Committee in teaching and development of new programmes at undergraduate and graduate levels; (iv) play a major part in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses; (v) represent the Department at Faculty Level and in University-wide activities whenever necessary; (vi) liaise with the University’s relevant partner institutions in China or elsewhere, and with relevant local institutions as required; (vii) attract, and lead research/conferences/publication funding; (viii) provide leadership and co-ordination in the fields of teaching, research and service for the Programme.
Requirements: Professor: Candidates must have: (i) at least a Masters Degree in Chinese Studies; (ii) Bachelors Degree in Chinese Studies or related field/s; (iii) at least 8 years of teaching experience in a University or comparable institution; (iv) have a good and sustained record of research and publications with at least 24 publications, 12 of which should be refereed journal articles; (v) lead and/or single author in at least 10 refereed journal articles or book chapters; (vi) Evidence of service to University, the Profession and the Community; (vii) evidence of effective academic leadership; (viii) fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese; (ix) fluency in spoken and written English; (x) the ability to attract funding from international sources will be an added advantage; (xi) a relevant PhD, Multi-disciplinary experience in teaching, research, administration or consultancy work will also be added advantages. The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of publications: clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers, name(s) of co-authors if any, and number of pages. The publications should be categorized into: books, monographs, chapters in books, refereed and non-refereed journals, consultancies etc. The CV should also have a detailed list of courses taught and the levels for which they were taught. Associate Professor: Candidates must have: (i) at least a Masters degree in Chinese Studies; (ii) Bachelors Degree in Chinese Studies or related field/s; (iii) at least 5 years of teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iv) have a good and sustained record of research and publications with at least 12 publications, 8 of which should be refereed journal articles; (v) lead and/or single authored in at least 6 refereed journal articles or book chapters; (vi) Evidence of service to University, the Profession and the Community; (vii) Evidence of effective academic leadership; (viii) fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese; (ix) fluency in spoken and written English.
