Rice Research Coordinator AfricaRice Sierra Leone

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) wishes to employ a highly qualified Rice Research Coordinator who will be based in Sierra Leone.


Background

Within the framework of the first phase of the World Bank-funded West Africa Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP), the Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) will provide support to the Mano River Union region and in particular to Sierra Leone. This support includes the recruitment of a senior scientist by AfricaRice to be based at the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI) to address rice research coordination in Sierra Leone, with spill-over effects to other Mano River Union countries.


Authority


The rice research coordinator will be based at the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI). He/she will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team working to sustain and improve the productivity of rice-based systems in Sierra Leone and in the Mano River Union in line with AfricaRice’s mission and mandate. She or he will report to the Director General of SLARI, or his designated representative, and the Deputy Director General of AfricaRice.

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is an association of 24 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR). The Center’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa, through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment.


Responsibilities

She or he will:

o Provide technical assistance in rebuilding the national rice research programs of Sierra Leone with spill-over effects to other MRU countries;
o Provide technical assistance in linking the outcome of the rice research programs to end-users, including national and regional rice sector development initiatives, and major donor-funded development projects and the private sector;
o Facilitate information management and capacity building related to rice-based systems;
o Plan and implement joint research, training, and information dissemination programmes related to rice-based systems and rice value chain development;
o Mentor young scientists and technical staff in Sierra Leone;
o Stimulate publications in peer-reviewed journals;
o Develop annual research and project proposals, work plans and budgets;
o Undertake any other duties as required by the needs of SLARI and AfricaRice.


Qualifications


o PhD degree in a relevant field;
o At least 10 years of experience in agriculture, research & development, and project management;
o Strong project and team management experience (demonstrated success in managing at least two multi-country agricultural projects of significant duration);
o Working experience / exposure to international organizations and interdisciplinary agriculture research;
o Working experience in Africa and knowledge of rice-based systems are considered important assets;
o Fluency in oral and written English with a working knowledge of French is required.

o This is an internationally recruited position.
