Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a Global Controller for its Finance Division.  The Global Controller supports the Director of Finance and Administration and is responsible for HRW’s accounting operations which includes the production of periodic financial reports, the maintenance of a system of accounting records, and the maintenance of a comprehensive set of controls which are designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.  
Responsibilities:
1. Oversee the timely and accurate fiscal and calendar closings for organization-wide internal and external reporting;
2. Record and post all transactions of all HRW entities globally;
3. Oversee payroll and cashbook;
4. Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures globally;
5. Oversee, the accounting operations of all entities, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations and policies and procedures;
6. Conduct a year end consolidated audit and prepare all US tax returns;
7. Prepare bank reconciliation for HRW’s major bank accounts and payroll journal accounts for the same offices;
8. Record and monitor all activity of HRW’s Endowment Fund;
9. Establish clear work plans for staff and communicate priorities clearly and effectively by providing oversight and taking responsibility for delegated assignments;
10. Ensure that the workload of the staff is manageable and the reporting lines are clear;
11. Provide appropriate and timely feedback on staff performance and provide guidance, coaching and training, as necessary; and
12. Perform additional responsibilities as required by the Director of Finance and Administration.
Qualifications:
Education:  A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration or a related field is required; an advanced degree in Accounting is highly desirable. CPA is required.
Experience:  Minimum ten years of experience with increasing complex responsibility in the accounting field of a progressive multi-national organization or company.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
1. Proven track record of all aspects of accounting, including general ledger, journal entries, budgets, account analysis, financial statements, and other accounting functions, is required.
2. Experience managing accounting in an organization with a complex structure in multiple locations and currencies is required.
3. High degree of proficiency in a computer-based accounting system and Excel is required; prior experience with not-for-profit financial software such as Serenic is highly desirable.
4. Strong analytical, problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercisesound judgment are required.
5. Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail is required.
6. Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization and with staff in remote locations are required.
7. Strong oral and written communications skills in English are required; proficiency in another language is desirable.
8. Prior experience working in an international nonprofit/NGO is desirable.
