Head of Science, Monitoring and Evaluation for Policy Actions Living Amazon Initiative - LAI

Position to be based in:

Santa Cruz (Bolivia), Paramaribo (Suriname), Lima (Peru), Cali (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador), Brasília (Brazil) or other WWF Office in Amazon Countries

Building upon four decades of experience in the Amazon, the Living Amazon Initiative (LAI) is WWF’s response to matching the scale and impact of the threats currently affecting the Amazon. LAI Strategy is built on the conviction that the fate of humanity is inseparable from the fate of the Amazon, and that humankind has within its reach the means to ensure a dignified life for all without destroying the Amazon’s natural endowments upon which our collective well-being is based. 

The LAI 2016 Focused Strategic Plan has 3 main strategies for the Amazon region: 1) Mainstream Protected Areas and Indigenous Lands into the Development Agenda; 2) Green Hydropower Development; and 3) Curb Deforestation and a Forest Economy. These strategies are inter-dependent and include interventions that are delivered mainly at the regional, biome-wide scale, with some targeted actions to be delivered in collaboration with WWF’s Amazon offices.

The Head of LAI Science, Monitoring and Evaluation works to incorporate the best available science as the technical foundation for the development and implementation of LAI Strategy, from the identification of conservation priorities, to the selection of effective conservation and sustainable development interventions, monitoring frameworks and performance reports. This position coordinates the efforts of a broad array of scientists and programme officers to monitor and evaluate the WWF LAI Strategy deployment, including through WWF local presences. Deals with the different knowledge sources and fronts, including biologic and social ones, among others.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  •  Develop and maintain contacts with the scientific and research community to further the science basis of WWF’s work in the Amazon and develop and maintain links with the relevant thematic teams in the WWF Network.
  • Perform a ‘radar’ function on current scientific debate and policy and recommend new priorities and changes in LAI strategy.
  • Work with WWF Offices in Amazon countries and others, benefiting from their Amazon and scientific knowledge and leading the collaborative effort of the WWF Network for the advancement of the science basis of WWF’s work in the Amazon, including the improvement and further development of scientific tools and methodologies, and enhancing M&E in WWF works related to the Amazon.
  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) elements of LAI Strategy, ensuring we are able to communicate impact and outcomes across the LAI strategy as a whole and its component parts, and work with LAI strategy leads to sharpen policy outcomes and identify opportunities.
  • Produce timely reports of the state of the Amazon conservation, impact of LAI Strategy and emerging knowledge related to the Amazon conservation and footprint, drivers of change and threats to it, and prepare an annual monitoring report of the advance of the LAI Strategy.
  • Implement LAI Focused 2016 Strategic Plan, in interaction with WWF Overall Amazon 2020 Strategy.
  • Supports the advance of the other LAI components and strategies, including communications. Build science and policy capacity of LAI team.
  •  Help support the development of concepts and project proposals drawing on latest science and policy opportunities. Search, find and adapt the best available knowledge to the Living Amazon Initiative needs, and, following LAI needs, develop networking and partnerships with scientists and knowledge centres.
  • Manage and report on project funds flowing through the budgets associated directly or indirectly to LAI science, monitoring and evaluation related actions.
  •  In coordination with LAI Regional Team, fundraise for the objectives and actions, as much as possible together with relevant NOs, POs and thematic GIs.
Required Qualifications
  •  At least 10 years of professional experience in the use of science for conservation and sustainable development with demonstrated success in managing multi-disciplinary teams, networking from the distance, technical capacity building and team leadership.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a leadership role, with demonstrated success in management of projects and programs, including managing multi-disciplinary teams and multiple donor budgets.
  • Advanced degree in conservation, natural, social or other sciences areas, management, international development or relevant fields; knowledge and experience of the Amazon region; familiarity with GIS and remote sensing-associated tools; knowledge of relational databases, strong analytical capabilities are necessary.
  • Available for international travel, up to 30% of the time.
  • Fully fluent in English; Fluent in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
