Associate Director, Communications

Reports to: Director of External Relations
Location: Action Against Hunger – USA, New York office,
Action Against Hunger is part of the ACF International network which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, & food security. ACF-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in 7 countries: Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Sudan & Uganda. ACF-USA, has over $45 million in programs, approximately 60 permanent staff based in NYC, 100 expatriate employees in the missions, & over 1,200 national staff. Additional growth is anticipated.
Summary of position
Reporting to the Director of External Relations, the Associate Director, Communications is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of ACF-USA’s communication, marketing and public relations activities, both internally and externally. This is a senior role charged with:
  • Developing and executing a comprehensive, bold communications strategy
  • Directly managing all communications activities to raise ACF-USA’s visibility among its target audiences, attract new supporters, and advance its life-saving mission
  • Producing exceptional content (written & digital) for print & electronic communications
  • Enhancing ACF-USA’s brand reputation while strategically promoting and positioning the organization and its leadership.
  • Supervising the communications team which currently includes a Senior Communications Officer, Creative Services Associate, and Communications Associate.

Essential requirements
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in managing communications and/or public relations, either in-house or with an agency.
  • Extensive writing and editing experience for a variety of print and online media.
  • Significant experience and leading, developing and managing comprehensive, innovative strategic communications, media relations, and marketing programs to advance an organization's mission. Proven experience translating strategic plans into result-based plans and evaluating whether strategies have successfully achieved the desired outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience proactively building relationships with reporters and editors, successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.
  • Ability to creatively and thoughtfully identify how new media technologies can be utilized.
  • Experience building, managing, mentoring and coaching a team of communications specialists.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work both independently & as a member of a team.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite (high proficiency in Excel) and Google products. Must be comfortable working with computers with minimal IT support.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Must be able to effectively interface with senior management, ACF-USA’s Board of Directors and other ACF staff
  • Genuine interest in & commitment to the humanitarian principles of Action Against Hunger.
  • Fluent written & spoken English. Knowledge of French & Spanish preferred.
The salary range for the Associate Director, Communications position is $80,000. ACF-USA provides all staff with an attractive benefits package.
