Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP Technical Assistance Branch Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Technical Assistance Branch/Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (UNEP), the intern will assist in undertaking capacity-building and training activities.
The incumbent will be required to undertake in one or more of the following activities:
1. Assist in the preparation of training and activities organized by the Technical Assistance Branch;
2. Assist in the delivery of online weekly training "webinars", including the preparation of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and recordings of the sessions;
3. Prepare, review and update, as appropriate, presentations and other materials (e.g. exercise hands-out, leaflets) to be used and distributed during workshops/meetings/other planned capacity building activities;
4. Participate in raising awareness about the webinars and workshops (website, newsletter, etc);
5. Maintain updated the database used by the Technical Assistance Branch and prepare, on request, the relevant analysis of the data;
6. Undertake any activity as requested by the Senior Programme Officer in the area of strategic regional delivery;
7. Participate in relevant meetings, including the 2014 BC OEWG 9;
8. Perform other relevant duties, as requested.
Outputs:
The incumbent will be expected to produce one or more of the following outputs:
Delivery of weekly training "webinars";
Production of the monthly TA Newsletter;
High quality input to training materials and other documents;
A final report of tasks undertaken during the internship and feedback on the internship.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
be enrolled in:
a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in Environmental Sciences/Chemical Engineering preferred.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English and French is required. Knowledge of Spanish is desirable.
