The Secure Access to Freedom of Expression Program (SAFE) seeks to enable journalists working in difficult environments to continue to do so as safely as possible with the establishment of three regional training centers for journalists – El Salvador for Latin America, Kenya for Africa, and Georgia for Eurasia.
Summary of Position
The Digital Safety Trainer, under the supervision of the Center Manager, will be contracted part-time for a 7-month period to prepare and deliver holistic safety trainings and workshops to journalists from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.
Citizen of El Salvador, English language proficiency and Native Spanish
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Description of Responsibilities:
Training
· In coordination with the Center Manager and Physical Safety Trainer, prepare regionally appropriate trainings and workshop curriculum for Latin American journalists.
· Ensure holistic approach and coordination with the Physical safety Trainer. This includes, but is not limited to, writing and presenting integrated lessons that require simultaneous delivery by the Physical and Digital safety Trainers.
· Review and help develop and/or contextualize digital safety training material (modular curricula, lesson plans, handouts, slide presentations)
· Deliver trainings promoting digital safety to journalists including: threat awareness and instructing in mitigation and circumvention strategies; protecting information and sources; understanding location tracking, digital traces and other surveillance risks; satellite phone, mobile phones and SMS; VPN, Tor browser bundle and anonymity; securing chat protocols through OTR and CryptoCat; safer Twitter, Facebook and other social media platform behavior; email encryption, passwords, secure tool deletion and emergency data destruction; hacking and malware; legality of tactics.
Assessment
· In order to monitor training quality and implementation, conduct ongoing assessments of trainings and materials with other Center staff. These evaluations will help to address any deficiencies and to identify relevant topics that may turn into new lessons in future trainings.
Hotline
· Lead the development of a 24/7 emergency assistance hotline for journalist
· Monitor 24/7 emergency assistance hotline to journalists.
· Review the documentation available on existing hotline systems in Central America.
Reports
· Support Center Manager on quarterly reports as required
· Report on activities as required by Center Manager
· Participate in weekly meetings and/or calls with SAFE staff and/or Program Director and Senior Technical Advisor.
Others
· Other duties as assigned by Center Manager and Program Director.
Skills and Qualifications:
Substantial experience working with online journalism and/or computer safety or related field (profiles with experience in both areas will be given priority)
Familiarity with Latin American media landscape
Excellent communications skills; explaining and converting complex technical scenarios into layman’s terms
Experience in the design and implementation in technical education, with trainings and/or workshops preferred
High levels of computer literacy and understanding of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and usability
