Postdoctoral position in Cognitive Psychology , Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières

A post-doctoral position in cognitive psychology is available at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) (www.uqtr.ca/isabelle.blanchette).
Emotion, thinking and reasoningThis research programme explores the informational (semantic/cognitive) and non-informational (somatic, physiological) mechanisms underlying the effect of emotion on higher level cognitive processes. The studies envisaged will examine deductive and symbolic reasoning as well as the balance between heuristic and analytical processing. The affective value of stimuli will be manipulated experimentally. We will examine a number of hypotheses including the possible role of cognitive load, interference, direct and indirect somatic effects. The experiments will use paradigms from deductive and analogical reasoning, as well as techniques such as dual-task, lexical decision, induced facial expressions and biofeedback. Behavioural, physiological, and electrophysiological measures will be used.
Funding : NSERC, 35 000$ p.a. (one year contract, renewable once)
Candidates are expected to:
  • Have a PhD in a relevant discipline (psychology, neuroscience, etc.)
  • Have an excellent grasp of experimental psychology, ideally with expertise in cognition and/or emotion research
  • Have an good knowledge of methodologies used in cognitive psychology
  • Have excellent research training and skills, including statistics, scientific writing, and knowledge of the usual research software (SPSS, EPrime, MatLab, etc.)
  • Have excellent oral and written English
  • Have good adaptation skills

The Psychology department at UQTR offers a dynamic environment. There has been significant recent growth in the area of cognition and neuroscience. The team is part of the CogNAC lab (Cognition, Neuroscience, Affect, et Comportement, www.uqtr.ca/laboratoirecognac). Recently built, dedicated research laboratories provide state-of-the-art facilities that include eye tracking, psychophysiological instruments, TMS and EEG. Trois-Rivières is a French-speaking town of modest size offering an excellent quality of life, a warm atmosphere, and easy access to many outdoors activities. It is within close proximity of Montreal and Quebec City. Though the work environment is generally French-speaking, most individuals are functionally bilingual (and eager to practice their English) and interactions in the lab may be bilingual. A basic grasp of French (or a genuine interest to acquire one) would be desirable for day-to-day life outside work.
