Governance Studies
BASIC FUNCTION
Leads online presence of Governance Studies (GS) program at Brookings. Provides report publishing, new media, website content and public event management support to Governance Studies. Manages layout and editing of scholarly research papers and thought capital. Maintains all components of the GS' websites; manages the program's e-newsletter for broad and targeted audiences; helps market content to other websites; provides ongoing strategic improvement of GS web content; coordinates regularly with the Brookings Communications Office. Provides some media relations support.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field required. Minimum 2 years of related experience required. Proven interest in political science and/or public policy a must. Familiarity with research-oriented work environments and previous public relations and/or Web site maintenance experience preferred. Experience working with members of the media also desired. Capitol Hill, think tank or public relations agency experience a plus
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Strong understanding of and experience with the web, including familiarity with web content management systems and ability to problem solve and do relevant research and web analysis required. Strong oral and written communications skills a must. Strong experience with the following computer skills: HTML, Word, InDesign, PowerPoint, Excel, and basic Photoshop required. Must be able to learn other new technology applications for communications and design; must have strong organization, high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and mature judgment; must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Ability to innovatively, creatively and effectively leverage Governance Studies electronic communications tools to promote our research and policy initiatives. High degree of self-motivation and good work ethic with a proven ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision and as part of a team. Creative and positive-thinker and learner. Knowledge of and interest in domestic policy issues preferred.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
50% Web Content & Newsletter Management
- Using established content management system, creates, updates and maintains all program, center and project content and web pages under GS in accordance with Brookings website standards and consistent with program's research and communications goals.
- Applies taxonomy and other metadata to optimize content presentation on various parts of the program's pages and Brookings.edu at large.
- Recommends sound search engine optimization practices for all GS content published on website.
- Drafts teaser and summary language to accompany site content, in conjunction with research and communications team; and suggests accompanying photos.
- Updates and maintains GS expert biography pages with new content and information.
- Serves as GS liaison to Brookings web team by attending regular web coordinator team meetings; keeps the VP and center directors informed of new features and issues of concern; coordinates with other programs.
- Monitors daily automated reports on web performance and coordinates with central Communications staff to optimize web pages.
- Evaluates the performance of the program's web pages regularly to determine how best to improve upon the use and impact of the site; works with Communications analytics team to conduct a monthly analysis of the performance of the program's web pages, including preparing charts for such statistics as users, visitors and downloads; tracks newsletter performance by reviewing click stream data.
- Maintains proficiency in HTML, SEO practices, online newsletter creation and other online communications applications and standards (e.g., participates in training sessions, learns new software applications to further develop skills).
- Coordinates with GS research and communications staff to format and distribute electronic newsletters using StrongMail in conjunction with the Office of Communications; advises GS on best newsletter strategy and practices; coordinates with Communications to analyze and report on newsletter metrics and continually improve newsletters.
- Coordinate with central Communications staff to analyze and report metrics, and continually improve newsletters.
25% Research Paper and Paper Series Management
- Oversees scholarly research paper production and maintains editorial calendar of scholarly research content and thought capital.
- Takes responsibility for all matters related to research publications, including copy-editing and the design production process.
- Edits short research papers, as appropriate.
- Lays out and formats scholarly content, using InDesign or other software as appropriate. Works with Communications Director and Central Communications to ensure adherence to scheduled release.
- Manages editing and layout production of two monthly paper series (Issues in Governance Studies and Issues in Technology Innovation).
25% Media Relations & Digital Support
- Along with Communications Director, manages scholars' media bookings and interviews. Routes incoming press calls as needed.
- Directs management of new media outreach tools, including Twitter and Facebook. Live Tweets public events and helps draw social media buzz for GS research, scholars and events. Brainstorms ways in which GS can raise its visibility with core audiences, including creative concepts such as videos, viral material and social media ideation.
- Reads relevant media to keep abreast of story trends and help identify coverage opportunities.
- Researches and identities relevant media targets.
- Consistently updates GS media lists to reflect editorial staff and beat changes.
- Monitors print and broadcast media for coverage that includes mention of GS projects and experts. Creates weekly monitoring report on media coverage and coverage analytics.
- Assists Communications Director with publicizing events, including attracting attendees and media, and uses new media tools to drive awareness and capture news made during hosted events.
- Live-Tweets events and writes wrap-up reports on events' highlights for post-event online content.
