Purpose of the Assignment

To guide UNICEF and partners in the development of regional parenting intervention packages for adolescents and their families, the UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia is currently undertaking a regional study on parenting programmes for parents of adolescents. As part of this regional study, the UNICEF Country Office in Romania is hiring four national researchers (Team Leader, Field researcher and two Junior Researchers) to collect strategic information at country level, on the basis of the results of the regional parenting study. The four national researchers will work under the supervision of the UNICEF focal point in Romania in close collaboration with the team leader of the regional study.

Assignment Tasks

The following terms of reference specifically related to two Junior Researchers:

Transcription of focus group discussions and key informant interviews;

Supporting focus group discussions, through but not limited to, note-taking and facilitation of activities.

Supporting the Team Leader and Field Researcher throughout the data collection process.

Qualifications of Successful Candidate

Diploma or degree in anthropology, sociology, development studies, childhood development, international human rights law, adolescent health or education, or other relevant field.

At least two years of qualitative research experience.

Fluency in local languages, including minority languages as relevant.

Experience in working as part of a research team.

Competencies of successful candidate

Excellent awareness of, and sensitivity to, gender considerations, power dynamics, (dis)ability, poverty, substance abuse, and other factors that affect parenting dynamics, parent-child relations, and parenting practices.

Good verbal communication skills, with proven ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds, with different strengths, needs, interests and abilities.

Experience in using qualitative research methodologies.

Ability to transcribe interviews verbatim.

Working knowledge of research ethics, including informed consent, data confidentiality, do no harm, child safeguarding etc.

Willingness to sign and adhere to a child protection policy and code of conduct, as well as the research ethical protocol.

Location of work

The consultancy is remote – based, with in-country travel as agreed with the supervisor. The consultants should provide their own computers and recording tools.
