SA Region - Liquid Gold Project

SUPERINTENDENT:
METALLURGY (PROCESS ENGINEER)

This role calls for a formal tertiary qualification in BEng Chemical Engineering, along with at least 3-5 years’ experience in an operational environment. Water processing technology experience and knowledge are essential, with special emphasis on ion exchange technology and application. Knowledge of mining and processing plant water reticulation systems would be advantageous, and diverse and international experience will be highly regarded. The incumbent must have excellent analytical skills, a high level of computer literacy, and be declared medically fit for the position and environment.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with coordinating the activities from a process development perspective as performed by the responsible engineering consultants and engineering firm in the development and execution of the Gold Fields Liquid Gold Project
  • Participating in the feasibility study and detailed engineering
  • Managing test work activities and the operation of Pilot Plant units where required
  • Gathering information from operational units and performing field work to assist in the engineering effort where required
  • Gathering information from underground water reticulation systems in various shaft systems on Gold Fields mines
  • Liaising with analytical service providers and generating reports for consideration in the engineering process
  • Liaising with external stakeholders and service providers when and where required
  • Managing and reviewing the process design criteria, the generation of mass, water and energy balances, process equipment sizing, process flow-sheets, piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), the preparation of plant general arrangements and layouts, capital costs and operating cost estimates.

MANAGER: PROCESSING
(LEAD PROCESSING ENGINEER)

Applicants for this position must be in possession of a formal tertiary qualification in BEng Chemical Engineering, whilst additional Project Management and Water Processing qualifications would be advantageous. At least 10-15 years’ multidisciplinary experience, including experience in a strategic and operational capacity, and experience in and knowledge of Water Processing technology, with special emphasis on ion exchange technology and application, are role requirements. Knowledge of mining and processing plant water reticulation systems would be advantageous. Knowledge of EIA and permitting processes are required, along with demonstrated skills with capital justification, budget development, expenditure and quality control systems. Involvement in the construction and operation of process plants, as well as diverse and international experience will be highly regarded. The incumbent must have excellent analytical skills, a high level of computer literacy, show proven collaboration at generating organisational strategy and developing and executing short- to long-term plans within a multifunctional senior management team, and be declared medically fit for the position and environment. The successful candidate will identify fit-for-purpose supply chain strategy improvements within the Gold
Fields supply chain environment, both locally and internationally. This will include identifying total cost of
ownership opportunities and developing, implementing and managing strategic commercial projects in order
to drive stakeholder value.

Interested persons should hold a commercial or technical degree or qualification and/or relevant career
experience, a proven track record of bottom line and long-term value delivery on projects and some 10 years’
experience in supply chain management (with a wide range of strategic sourcing commodity management
experience). This must be supplemented by a good understanding of technology platforms and how these
can optimise manual supply chain processes, plus a sound understanding of project methodologies and
inputs required in order to produce relevant TCO models. Our ideal person demonstrates a good
understanding of supply chain processes in general, but specifically requirements for an effective procure-topay,
contract management, strategic sourcing, demand planning and forecasting, logistics and benefits
tracking processes. He/she possesses strategic vision and demonstrates good supervisory and leadership

This role requires a formal Engineering or Procurement (Supply Chain) and/or relevant tertiary qualification, a minimum of 5 years’ strategic sourcing and procurement experience and good knowledge of mining industry equipment. Demonstrated management, financial and negotiating competencies and excellent English verbal and written communication skills are also needed, along with computer literacy (particularly in Microsoft Office). We seek an assertive self-starter who is able to plan, administer and organise and pay attention to detail, possesses excellent interpersonal abilities and is prepared to work extended hours on an ad hoc basis.

Appointment hinges on successful security screening. A graduate qualification in Supply Chain, contract experience (or a relevant legal qualification) and a technical background (or engineering qualification) would prove advantageous.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing commercial and technical guidance to a cross-functional multidisciplinary commodity team that is responsible for developing commodity strategies and other initiatives, aimed at reducing the Total Cost of Ownership of engineering commodities, maintenance and services purchased by Gold Fields
  • Developing and executing commodity strategies of high value, high risk engineering commodity contracts and maintenance contracts, by making recommendations within respective commodity teams to receive strategic direction, including preparing and issuing of enquiries/tenders, analysing responses and making recommendations for adjudication, leading commercial negotiations, initiating contracts and continuously managing vendor performance
  • Leading supplier qualification and measurement for repair/engineering commodities and managing relationships with suppliers
  • Managing vendor relationships with key operational customers and ensuring delivery in accordance with SLAs
