Government & Public Affairs Director

The General Delegation of the PLO to the United States, the Palestinian diplomatic mission in
Washington, is looking to fill the position of Government & Public Affairs Director with an
expected start date of June 2012.
The Government & Public Affairs Director is a senior position and plays an integral role in pursuing the General Delegation’s strategic goals. The position requires a candidate with extensive experience and background in American politics and society.
It entails running all aspects of the Government & Public Affairs department; this includes strategically targeting the executive and legislative branches of US Government as well as cultivating relationships and reaching out to different segments and groups in American society, and managing the team comprising the Government & Public Affairs department.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Develop outreach strategies targeting the US government (Congress in particular), civil society and supportive communities;
• Develop and maintain relations with all pro-Palestinian groups in the US;
• Cooperate with Human Rights organizations to support Palestinian rights;
• Advise the Ambassador on outreach strategies targeting NGOs and supportive communities such as pointing out preferences, red lines, common interests, and meeting points;
• Manage the Government & Public Affairs department;


Qualifications


The successful candidate will possess the following skills, qualifications & attributes:
• Bachelor’s Degree Required, Masters preferred;
• Minimum of FIVE years of relevant experience;
• In depth knowledge of American politics and society; specialized knowledge in DC and lobbying is a plus
• Intimate knowledge of Palestinian issues;
• High energy, strong interpersonal skills, and comfort working with various types of constituents;
• Excellent organization and administrative skills;
• Facility in mentoring junior staff and developing their skills.
• The ability to work both as a part of a team and independently as needed;
• Capacity to maintain poise and work effectively under extreme pressure;
