Senior Curricula Development Advisor Pathfinder

Pathfinder International is dedicated to creating access to and improving the quality of family planning, reproductive health, abortion, and community- and facility-based HIV and AIDS care and services. In partnership with host country governments and nongovernmental organizations, we train facility-based health care providers to improve both the quality and range of their technical and counseling skills. Facility-based services are further improved through provision of equipment and facility renovations. We mobilize communities to advocate for quality services and improve access through trained community-based volunteers. Pathfinder improves youth’s access to health care by creating youth-friendly services and training peer educators to promote them. In each project, Pathfinder works with our partners to improve both their management and program implementation capacity. Through all that we do, Pathfinder strives to empower women, men, adolescents, and communities to make choices and create environments conducive to healthy reproductive behaviors.

Program Overview

Evidence to Action for Strengthened Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services for Women and Girls (E2A) is USAID’s global flagship project for strengthening quality FP/RH service delivery. The project is designed to reduce unmet need by scaling-up proven best practices (BPs) to ensure that women and girls receive – and use – quality services through all stages of the reproductive life cycle. By promoting healthy FP/RH behaviors, gender-equality, and compelling evidence for FP use, E2A will directly support the principles of the USG Global Health Initiative (GHI). This five-year project is led by Pathfinder International in partnership with the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), ExpandNet, IntraHealth International, Management Sciences for Health (MSH), and PATH.

E2A assists public and private organizations in developing countries to identify, apply, and facili¬tate the scale-up of effective, evidence-based FP/RH interventions and BPs in service delivery. E2A works with regional and national USAID missions and USAID/Washington, host country partners, international federations and consortia, and US foundations to achieve USAID’s three results.

•Result 1: To increase global support for the use of FP/RH BPs to strengthen service delivery

•Result 2: To synthesize and disseminate knowledge about the use of FP/RH BPs to strengthen service delivery

•Result 3: To apply and scale up FP/RH BPs in ways that strengthens service delivery

Position Purpose

USAID/Washington is completing the Training Resource Package (TRP) for Family Planning. The Senior Curricula Development Advisor will liaise with USAID, the Knowledge for Health (K4H) and Capacity Plus Projects, among other stakeholders, to finalize resources and ensure coordination. TRP has been a collaborative effort between USAID, WHO, and UNFPA to fill a recognized need for standardized, state-of-the art FP training materials that can be used to plan, deliver, and evaluate in-service and pre-service training. It will cover all family planning methods and include modules on fundamental skills for FP provision, such as counseling, record keeping, infection prevention, and physical assessment. TRP learning materials are currently organized in two groups—modules for clinicians and modules for community health workers (CHWs). The TRP is designed for instructor-based classroom training. The TRP will be made available online to make sure that these resources are as widely available as possible. Each of the five module folders has seven or eight subfolders of module documents and resources such as: session plans; presentations; case studies (clinicians’ modules only); role plays; job aids handouts; games activities; knowledge assessments or skills assessments; and other resources.

While much work has already been done by the working group (there is extensive content), there is the need for a dedicated curricula specialist to see the project to fruition. This involves continued coordination with the working group members, including organizing regular meetings as well as hands-on work to simplify and complete all documents, under the direction of USAID. Finally, the Advisor will coordinate with K4Health to ensure on-line availability of the TRP, and will be responsible for a limited print and CD production. S/he will organize a dissemination meeting in Washington, DC and will attend the FIGO 2012 meeting in Rome, Italy, to support the a presentation of the TRP.

The Senior Curricula Development Advisor will report to the E2A Chief of Party, and with technical oversight from USAID. It is anticipated that this will be a 12-month position.
