Innovations for Successful Societies (ISS), a research program at Princeton University, supports the work of public servants, policy makers, and scholars who lead institutional change in challenging circumstances. Position Summary
ISS seeks a full-time, on-site Associate Director. The job of the Associate Director is to administer the ISS research program, with the guidance of the faculty director. The responsibilities of the Associate Director are outlined below.
- Management of research activities (approximately 50% of work time), including:
- Scheduling of research tasks for the program and     for full-time and contract researchers, and monitoring of progress against those schedules;
- Training and coaching ISS researchers in the research process and desired outputs and outcomes;
- Reviewing and editing researcher outputs;
- Scheduling of the workload of other external contractors, such as editors and interpreters, in a way that maximizes fast delivery of program outputs;
- Oversight of relationships with external organizations, such as donors and partners, with a view to program delivery in line with contractual obligations or other agreed timelines;
- Acting as a single channel of communication between the faculty director and partners/contractors;
- Facilitating coordination and communication between all program staff, contractors and external partners.
- Direct responsibility and/or oversight of key program support functions (approximately 25% of work time), including:- Human resource management, including recruitment, on-boarding and exit of full-time staff and contractors. In addition, performance management of full-time staff;
- Program finances, including budgeting and financial management;
- Information technology and communication, including knowledge management and the ISS website.
- External relations on behalf of ISS (approximately 25% of work time), including:- Supporting the Director in meetings with visiting leaders, potential donors, or program partners;
- Liaison with organizations with similar research agendas to ISS in order to coordinate or communicate research activities;
- Publicizing ISS research outputs using traditional and new media channels.

On occasion, the Associate Director will participate in research overseas and act as a liaison with partner programs abroad. Travel is usually for two to three weeks at a time and may include work in countries that are under State Department travel advisories.
Short-listed applicants will be required to participate in two rounds of interviews and may be asked to provide additional documentation of skills.

 

Job Requirements

Essential Qualifications
-   Program management and administration skills;
-   Excellent people management skills;
-   Knowledge of and passionate interest in ISS research;
-   Bachelor's degree;
-   Excellent writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications
-   Experience working within a university environment or other large bureaucracy;
-   Direct experience of overseas development issues, preferably in a developing country;
- Knowledge of a language other than English (ideally, Spanish and/or French).
