Director of International Programmes

At a time when the world is impatient to see poverty eradicated, this newly-created leadership position will give you the most influential role at a senior level in Plan International, tasked with increasing the impact of our programmes on children’s lives.
About us
Globally, Plan is one of the top 5 INGOs in terms of size and reach. Through Plan International and supported by Plan’s Federation of 21 fundraising countries, we work in 50 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas to promote child rights, and lift millions of children and their communities out of poverty.
The role
You will take responsibility for the delivery of high quality programmes for children and communities wherever Plan International has accountability for them. This will include our long-term development work, advocacy at international, regional, national and local level, disaster preparedness, and emergency and humanitarian response.
In addition to the focus on programme delivery, you will also play a pivotal role in developing Federation-wide programme strategies, policies and standards and Plan’s ambitions to be a thought leader. We want you to act as a high profile champion of change, contributing to the  creation of Plan’s new operating model and promoting new ways of working and thinking designed to improve our effectiveness, credibility and efficiency. You will also deputise for the CEO in his/her absence.
This is a big managerial and leadership role made possible by the passion and commitment of some 9000 Plan staff, who work in a structure which mandates an integrated Plan International presence in each programme country under a single Country Director. Accountabilities are well-established from CO level to the four Regional Office teams in the Americas, Asia and Africa and upwards to this post holder.
Requirements
  • You will be a respected and experienced leader in international development, with an outstanding record in senior management. Your track record will include direct experience of programme delivery and advocacy, ideally in a wide range of locations.
  • Adept at building teams, you will have the credibility, drive and passion for children’s rights to inspire Plan colleagues to improve programme quality and foster innovation.
  • You will bring the skill, personality and experience to create partnerships within the Federation and with external bodies, including institutional funders, think tanks and the “for profit” sector.
  • Fluency in English is a must and a thorough knowledge of one of the other two languages most widely used in Plan (French or Spanish) is required. Other language skills will be an advantage.
You must be able to start no later than August 1st 2014.
